I have a 16-year-old cat who developed a really annoying habit over the last year. Every morning at around 5am she gets up and paces around the apartment moaning over and over. She sounds like she's about to croak. I get up and check her and she immediately shuts up. When I go back to bed she starts again. Her food is full and litter is ok. I think she just does it to be evil.

I hear this is common in older cats. Anyone else have a cat who does this and how do you deal?

Trade in the cat for a dog. Then train the dog to keep quiet.

It's her way of making sure you get up to pay her attention / treats.

She is training you for a new trick.

I would suspect some sort of organic disfunction. Have you taken your cat to the vet?

One of my cats had similar symptoms, though he was also loosing weight. With help from the vet he lived for two more years.

Best of luck,
Uno

She's got a lot of problems including hyperthyroidism, a heart murmur, and kidney issues. All those things seem under control. She does not seem to be in pain though it sure sounds like she's about to die when she moans. I'll try to record it next time.

We have a 16 year old male that does this at random times during the day. One of our dogs then starts wimpering in concert while he is doing it. It has been something we have noticed quite a few of our elderly cats doing when they get to be 15 or older. Oddly enough his 17 year old mother doesn't do it nearly as often.

My cat is almost 16. She does this on occasion, but thankfully, not all the damned time.

My fiancee's cat does this every morning at 6 am. She started the habit last year at 7 am, I think as a way to make sure we got up for work and school and such, but when daylight savings time came around, her internal clock didn't reset. Now we get a wakeup yowl at 6 am. Every. Fucking. Day. Including weekends. It's not the best thing ever....

But she's only 3 or 4. If she keep this up, I don't foresee her making it to age 16.

My cat does that sometimes. She's only 4 years old though. It's very clear that she's doing it for attention, because she'll also paw at the bedroom door while she does it.

Definitely not deaf. She has awesome hearing. My dog actually was deaf for a month from an ear problem and that's where he learned to bark for everything. Now his hearing is back 100% but he still barks all the time. Never did before.

The cat does it too.

She's been to the vet a lot lately due to constant tract infections and had x-rays and ultrasounds. Nothing really long with her other than kidneys are a little small (common for older cats). I thought it was pain too because it sounds horrible but when I get up to check on here she's just like, "Hey there, what's up?" She rarely does it other than in the early AM.

Could be the start of kidney troubles, take kitty to the vet to get checked out and make sure plenty of water is around.

If your cat is getting lots of UTIs, you might want to try to get him/her some prescription food. Science Diet did the trick for my cat- he used to get lots of UTIs.

Also, listen to Spidey re the Kidney stuff. My cat died from kidney failure. I noticed his declining health and we brought him to the vet and the vet blew us off and gave him a clean bill of health. A month alter we took him to another vet b/c we knew that he was not ok, and it was too late by then to help, so we had to put him down.

It's normally how they go, and it really helps if you catch it early. Cat's are the great fakers of something being wrong. You won't know it until it's too late and then you look back and see all the little subtle clues.

Seems to be drinking more, drinking less
More urine, less urine
A history of UTI means there is likely some kidney damage, minor, but they're weakened

Just put down my 16 year old female a month or two ago...kidneys. Crying in the morning when we took showers even though she had plenty of water at all times. That was her subtle way of saying..."hay! I gotta a water problem going on!!!!!"
