Got that. The door flap won't work though so I had to take it off.

My cat is weird. He sits in the box and digs at the walls as if he's burying his turds there or trying to get litter off his paws. He'll do it for several minutes too. Then he'll get out of the box, avoid the mat in front of it, and dig at the carpet for a while. It's a mess. I vaccuum regularely though.

I don't recommend assuming that the cat will be ok with food and litter in the same spot. Even Tony Soprano knows that you don't s**t where you eat. Lots of cats feel that way too.

The closet we put the litter box in is pretty small since it is under some stairs. So we were able to buy one of those plastic mats that you put under rolling chairs (like at an office) and it covers most of the carpet in the closet. That way the she can't claw up the carpet when she is attempting the bury her poop from outside the litter box.

DUDE!!! So does mine, and alternates scratching either side of the box for frickinever. It's the oddest damn thing to see him do his business then abuse the inside of the litterbox.

Worked fine for our cat, but you could be right. I still recommend the litter box in the closet if feasible though. The cat food can always go elsewhere (like the kitchen). It's containing the litter box smell that is the primary concern IMO.

We did that with our litter box and you almost never smell anything outside the closet. We keep both the cat's litter box and food in there. It only took 1 day to train her to use the cat door.

It's a rental place not a purchase, therefore no holes in the door, unless I buy another door...

I actually need all three probably, because one of my cats tends to defend the litterboxes. But he isn't smart enough to defend all three.

When we first got our two newer cats, they would defend their litter box from us. They'd hover around it when we were cleaning it, and when we finished cleaning they'd go right in and do their business again.
