The same type of dog that has the ability to taught these duties is the same type of dog that you can buy and train to fetch your newspaper. The highly trainable brain and willingness to learn is still there.

The same cannot be said of cats.

Not all dogs make it through the selection process for the highly specialized / trained things (police, guide, etc).

Not all of them make it through the selection process for that job, but he's making it sounds like a dog is either a highly trained police dog or it's an animal which won't learn, like a cat.

In reality most will learn pretty complex tricks.

Big deal about training your dog to go fetch the newspaper. My cat would bring me the toy she wanted to play with. She'd also push buttons on my alarm clock to make it go off and get me up when her bowl was empty (we had one of those auto feeder thingies where she could nibble and run away and come back later). Etc. That has absolutely no bearing on why I choose a cat over a dog though.

You can teach a cat to do all kinds of things. You can teach dogs to do things cats can't. You can teach cats to do things dogs can't.

It isn't about what you can teach them and how much they can learn you dipshits, it's what kind of companionship best suits what you're looking for in a pet, plain and simple.

Poodles are considered to be pretty much the smartest and most trainable dogs, despite their "smaller" brains. Brain size is no measure of capacity (brain size to body size ratio is a little bit closer). The reason why poodles don't lead the blind is size, not trainability.

They're specific breeds. They're not chosen for those tasks because they're common. There's a reason certain breeds are chosen for certain tasks.

But get 2. You should be scooping out their litter everyday anyways, so that doesn't make a big difference.

We have one cat, Miss Kitty whom we got as a kitten. When you have only one, they tend to bond more with you,they regard you as fellow cats. The negative to only having one is this.. if you're married or living with someone the cat will generally favor one spouse over the other.. and the spouse they favor isn't usually the one who really wanted the cat to begin with. When you have 2 one cat usually favors each spouse.

I do all poop patrol duties, I tend the feeding station and her water fountain.. guess who she goes to for attention? lol, she goes to Red ! I wish I'd gotten two.

Not entirely true. Groups of domesticated cats form social groups and can hunt in concert much like their wild coousins do on the Serengeti. They may not take to being lashed together with a dozen others (there's a mental image) and mushed over tundra, but getting themselves together to take down a big bird is pack enough for me.

Some cats needs to be only cats. But if you get a pair that are siblings or have already been living together they'll be fine and appreciate the company.

Cats aren't pack animals the way dogs are, but there is still a social aspect to their behavior.
