Cat5e shielded wire?

I just purchased some Cat5e shielded cable to wire my house (least expensive wire I could find). I just want to make sure that this will work fine for networking without utilizing the shielding. I also have wallplates ordered that do not utilize the shielding. I have not been able to find information saying this will not work so I figured you guys are the best to ask. I am assuming if I just pull the shielding back it will work the same as unshielded Cat5e, correct? I also have another roll of Cat5e cable that is unshielded, I will be using one of these cables for phone line and the other for a home network, which cable should I use where and why? Would the shielded Cat5e cable produce better results as a phone line or network line.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You have to pull back the shielding in order to get the RJ-45 connector on and crimped.

It's not going to matter what you use or where you use it. STP cabling is mainly for protecting the twisted pairs against EFI/RFI and the like. Unless you've got a lot of radio equipment in your house, you should be fine.

CAT5 will work as a phone line I believe, you just have to know what wires to arrange/connect.

without grounding the shield what you have is one big giant antenna (cat5 cable)

I guess it could work, but you'd be better off with unshielded twisted pair.

Without the shielding properly grounded, you don't even have Cat3.

You'll also need the proper shielded RJ45 connectors, and panels that will support the shielded connectors (both are much more expensive than the unshielded stuff).

You'll probably get traffic through the wire, but it's seriously sub-optimal without all the matching shielded components.

Good Luck

Why would this be? Cat3? Wouldn't this be similar to running Cat5e UTP through some metal conduit? However if this is the case, this wire would be just fine for phone lines, correct?

conduits are grounded. Plus they aren't wrapped around the wire pairs.

Its probably not a big deal, but since there are others that read these posts scottmac and I like to point out cabling problems.

AND (!) for the record, the goal is to use the largest practical diameter of conduit, because the proximity of the (grounded) metal conduit affects the transmission properties of the UTP.

You can buy spacers designed to roughly center the cabling in a large diameter conduit, most folks just put in some interduct or similar to keep the cabling off the metal.

Improperly installed / terminated shielded cabling is just above silver satin (flat, untwisted, crap phone wire) on the scale of desirable network media. There isn't much that's worse. Knotted coat hangers .... maybe.

It's a bad thing.

somebody has been reading eia/tia just a little too much.

As far as I know 100 Base-T was never even qualified for STP. impedance difference I believe.

I wanna be an RCDD when I grow up .... I wanna be an RCDD *-MUCH-* more than I wanna be a CCIE.

I'm about to commence the studying for the RCDD/LAN test.

I wanna be a *real* wire guy. Wire's where it's at. If you ain't got media, you ain't got no network.

Besides, if you're gonna go through all the bother of pulling cable, why not just do it properly and spare the hours of ugly troubleshooting glitchy problems?

I'm still trying to figure out how someone could know that they are about to install a marginal (at best) system, and decide to go ahead with it and hope for the best ... all that time wasted, all that frustration ... life's to short to mess around doing half-assed jobs. Do it right and enjoy the benefits(especially when it takes no more effort to do it right).

Just my humble opinion.
