Jeez, I tried to do it your way for once (I usually just install over old drivers) and I thought I was going to have to reformat my HD. When I go to uninstall the ATI Software part, that works fine. But after I do that and try to uninstall the ATI Display Driver, it gives me an error, saying some part is missing. So I try to install the new drivers. Once it's nearly done, it tells me that installation did not succeed because there's something wrong with the software.

So I reboot and it detects my video card again, but uses the old driver and doesn't attach any software to it. So I go into control panel and hit the ATI Display Driver remove thing, and it lets me select the display adapter and uninstall it. THen I installed the new stuff, and everything seems to be pretty much ok now.

I'm gonna try to play some Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 and see if it looks any better. You know, for an old game, it sure does kick the hell out of modern PCs. It gets my processor as hot as running Prime95 and sometimes chugs when looking at the water.

Maybe different gamma in game and in the desktop, not sure though...

I'm using 3.10 with a Radeon 9800. No particular reason, just haven't been updating in a awhile.

For reference: How to install new ATI drivers.

disable antivirus
uninstall old control panel and do not restart
uninstall old display drivers, select all in uninstall screen, then restart
let windows start up and do its detection thing
disable antivirus
install new drivers, restart

And if you are having random reboots and crashes, make sure your card isn't OC'd.

Just to note, I have never had any problems ever before by just installing the new drivers and restarting. I had a lot more problems trying to uninstall.

I just install them over the old ones on my laptop (ATI) and desktop (Nvidia).

rbV5, will MMC 9.1 fix the horribly shoddy "compatability" between ATI TV cards and Nvidia video cards?

No youneed to go back to mmc 8.8 or lower to use Nvidia cards with an ATI tv card . Or you can use any third party tv tuner software since theyre all the same. ANy tv tuner software will work for your ati tv tuner.

I also like to run the newest version of Driver Cleaner after the uninstall of the previous drivers, to make sure all the old stuff is gone. It helps tremendously to remove possible conflicts.

I followed the instructions on the ATI website... It was actually the uninstalling that got me.

I dont get it, every driver release for practically any hardware you get a couple of people raving how they suck they crash its etc etc, and how its DEFINATELY the drivers... Yet 99% of people seem to be fine? I cant remember having any non-specific problem with any driver except Soundblaster's. (I've had plenty specific ones, like when nvidia chose to disable my DVD playback, detonator's making punkbuster crash [sorry to pick on nvidia, who certainly arent terrible for this, just the only examples that come to mind]).

See it for games aswell, "et is buggy crashing my system" etc etc, always these otherwise intelligent level headed people just refuse to beleive it might be a problem other than the coding of the game .exe, despite all evidence pointing to otherwise.

No problems here with Freelancer,mind you I always use Driver Cleaner before any new driver install,it could also be your OC that`s causing the problem.

No big deal, just Driver Cleaner always finds some old ATi registry files even after the standard remove from Control Panel method and removes them,it`s also very easy to use .
