well I just installed 9.4... no driver sweeper, no uninstalling previous versions, no whatever. Just simple click and install, and low and behold, I GET THE FREAKING CODE 43 BUG.

*sigh* As I've said, this problem seems to crop up with vista users running multi-gpu with 4GB of ram. Why ATI hasn't come around and fixed it is beyond me. In any case, unless someone else has an actual tested solution for me besides the driver sweeper shebang please don't reply with "suggestions" (AKA you-don't-got-a-clue). Sympathies however are welcome

For now, it's off to uninstall-reboot-driversweeper-reboot-install-8.1-reboot-cross-fingers

Edit: Actually the only working drivers is 8.1 which really pisses me off that ATI hasn't managed to deliver a bug free driver from 8.11 up. I suppose I should be thankful that they at least host downloads for older drivers...

I don't even have to reboot when upgrading my drivers anymore. Pretty cool.

ATI have released a Hotfix driver solving this:
* Provides Catalyst WHQL Certified driver for the ATI Radeon? HD 4890
* Resolve the "Error Code 43 - incompatible display" issue seen on the secondary GPU when enabling ATI CrossFireX in the ATI Catalyst Control Center

I personally have not come across this, but theres your fix, be happy .

Thank you SO MUCH. Lol at the March 31st release date on that hotfix. Well it's as they say, better late than never!

nope .. no problems with 4870x-2 or even CrossFireX-3

just install overtop the old ones - OR, use ATi's OWN Cat uninstall manager

Something is wrong with your PC perhaps - or more likely *because* you use a driver cleaner

that hotfix is a simpler way of working around the issues you are experiencing that seems to happen with a few configurations. What worked for some was to reinstall the same drivers over again; and sometimes a third time works; it is the way Vista sets up your driver when you go through all the unnecessary steps with Driver Cleaner. Vista sets the old drivers back the second you reboot anyway - and in that case you might install them again - without rebooting

you don't want to live forever with old hotfixes

they attempt to, but it's not set in stone....
Considering they haven't missed a monthly release since Catalyst started back in 2002, I'd say it's pretty much a given. The only (recent) exception to this rule is the relegation of driver support to quarterly updates for certain legacy parts.

Do you know anything about their driver structure? Have they modularized it enough such that this frequent release schedule doesn't hurt efficiency?
I might feel better about them doing it every other month.
Maybe all they have to do is add profiles which tweak the way the driver interprets commands for each game or something. Who knows.
What goes into tweaking a driver for better performance for a game anyways?

No I've already said before, the whole code 43 thing popped up way before I even knew what driver cleaner/sweeper was, let alone had it on my computer. it was going from 8.11 to anything higher (in my case 9.2) that started the entire shebang.

So far, I've gotten 9.2 to work on my computer, but 9.4 still would give me code 43, and the hotfix doesn't seem to address 9.4 as it does 9.2 because 9.4 is a later release which means the hotfix can't install over 9.4. Applying the hotfix first then upgrading to 9.4 is a no go, with code 43 still popping up.

It's probably something to do with my rig. Not sure why but I guess I'm happy just to be running 9.2...

Nvidia drivers are like that too. I don't know why people keep saying to uninstall this then safe mode then delete these files then move this there etc. Have drivers from either company ever needed that?

I remember people recommended those steps only if you were changing sides, i.e. going from an nvidia card to an ATI one. In that case I think it makes some sense, but for simple driver upgrades I think it's unnecessary.

You can simply install new drivers over the top of the old ones from either vendor but this raises the risk of driver conflicts. People recommend Driversweeper because it removes this potential problem when diagnosing what people say is going on. Really, we don't know if people are installing new drivers correctly or removing them correctly etc so It's best to say 'use Driversweeper' as a first option in order to try to rule out driver conflict.

For the record this is how best to uninstall and use a new driver (i am more familiar with ATI drivers but the same can be said for Nvidia).
1. Download new driver
2. Uninstall the old driver. This means navigating to C:/ATI and follow the path until you get to a folder named Driver in which you will see a 'Setup.exe' or an uninstaller. Click this and follow the prompts till you reach a choice between 'Install' and 'Uninstall' click uninstall which will then display the ATI software currently installed select all then click Ok and let it run.
3. You will be prompted to reboot, upon entering windows again run Driversweeper and to clean out your vendors files. Now, reboot you computer again, yes you have cleaned out the files in Drivercleaner but some are still in use to power the display you are seeing at the moment.
4. After rentering windows, open the executable of your newly downloaded drivers and follow the prompts to install.

This should not be necessary but it does remove entirely the potential for driver conflicts, if you still have issues after using the method above, it may be something specific to your configuration or 3rd party software. Since the days of the 9800pro I have not had an issue with ATI/Nvidias drivers in multiple configurations, so usually before blaming the drivers, makesure you have thoroughly exhausted all possibilities relating your specific config.
