In two weeks Im having cataract surgery. Ive been type 1 diabetic for 54 years, so more prone to cataracts than normal. Im not really nervous as its pretty common nowadays, but wanted to get other's experiences with it. How was the surgery? Recovery? What lens did you get? Happy with the results?

I picked the light adjustable lens which is pretty new in the US, but has been out in Europe for about 10 years, so proven. Its a remarkable lens, as you can make tweaks up to 4 times POST implantation. The other advantage to this lens is recovery time is super short. Im having both eyes done one day after the other.

Looks a little scary, but my father in law got it a few years ago and it definitely improved his quality of life substantially.

My wife and I had the surgery in early 2019. We opted for the most expensive lens. She doesn't have to wear contacts or glasses anymore, and I only need some cheap readers for close work. Best decision we ever made.

Same here. More testing and measuring for accuracy. I also elected to have the laser cut the old lens into pieces rather than ultrasound as it is gentler on the eye. Had the right eye set for distance and the left set for close and the brain figures out the image from what it gets. I no longer require glasses at all with the exception of very small print and very close work. For that I use 2.5 readers. The lenses also have a blue blocker filter.

Surgery was very fast probably 30 minutes from start to finish and in recovery. I had them done two weeks apart.

Went back to work the following day after the implant seeing better than I had in over a decade. Best thing I ever had done besides my knee replacement.

Yeah it's no big deal doesn't hurt neither during or after the surgery, but man is it freaky you can see the scalpel getting into your eye and I at least got pretty freaked out by that.

Really? Like, who has bad vision? Grow up, bro.

Lol -- in all seriousness, my wife's uncle just had both eyes done. Said it went from looking like he was seeing the world through a glass Coke bottle to full-HD. He got both eyes done, I believe, a week apart. Really, it was just a couple days to heal up.

See the scapel? I didn't see any scapel. They put the laser cup on my numb eye and all I saw was a red pinpoint led. Then the laser cross hatched the natural lens and I couldn't see anything except a blur. When they sucked out all the remnants of the natural lens I saw nothing but whiteness. Then I did see the replacement lense as a shadow going in. When it unfolded Boom I could see again.

It did to me too. It was like looking through a greasy window with the cataract.

Good luck on your surgery! I know you will love the results!

My exact experience. It was a weird feeling though. I had one eye done just as the covid19 was starting to get steam....been waiting for a long time for the other eye now...but I don't care. I'm just so happy I got it done...best feeling in the world.

My doctor told me after the surgery. these are her exact words "I was sweating" she's never seen cataracts this bad "third world country" her words again. She had to crank that laser to the max lol. Long story short, so happy right now and its been over 6 months now..novelty hasn't worn off

I was blind for the first two years of my life. Then at the age of three, I had cataract surgery and could see again.

Had my eyes checked the other day and was told I have the beginnings of cataracts myself.

Bumping an old thread...looks like I'm about to have the cataract surgery. My medicare advantage will pay for the basic lens (plus, of course, I have a co-pay) which will still leave me needing glasses, both for vision correcting as well as astigmatism...I keep reading that in about 70% of people...their astigmatism actually gets worse with the basic lens...
OR, I have some options for "premium" lenses.
Stage 1 will obviously eliminate the cataracts, but will also fix my astigmatism...and I'll have the choice between wearing reading glasses or distance glasses. (I think I'd opt for readers so I can wear sunglasses again. ) $2100 per eye.
Stage 2 are multi-focal lenses which will remove the cataracts, fix my astigmatism, and I SHOULDN'T need glasses at all. $3200/eye
Stage 3 are the light-adjustable lenses which fix the cataracts, fix the astigmatism, but I will PROBABLY still need either readers or distance glasses...BUT, they can be adjusted to fine-tune my vision. $3500/eye.

Being on a pretty tight fixed income nowadays...and at my age, I'm really struggling to justify the extra costs for any of the premium lenses...but dammit, it would really be nice to not need glasses all the time. I keep leaning towards the $2100/eye lenses...but dammit, that's a lot of money.

My current glasses with Nikon progressive lenses are 1700 dollars... no idea how much cheaper it would be in the states. I have myopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.

My wife had a very similar experience. She opted for a special lens in one, which corrects astigmatism (which effected only one eye). Threw away her glasses, but has readers all around the house.

When she was between eye #1 and #2, we were sitting in traffic. With the corrected eye, she could easily read license plates on cars ahead of us. With the other eye, she could read tags even on a car 10 feet in front of us, with her corrective lens.

She raves about having it done, and is very happy.

Side note: It took me months to get used to seeing her without her glasses, which she had worn since before I met her, 60 years ago.
