I love this first comment:

Richard Dawkins deserves some sort of fucking statue on the moon. I don't understand how he can consistently talk to such ignorant and quite frankly hilarious people without snapping into a fit of hysterical laughing and unfiltered rage.
The people he talks to on the regular basis could make a Buddhist monk flip his shit. I'd love to see his blood pressure.

This is kind of like finding someone with both crutches and leg braces and challenging him to a foot race.

Ya. She's one of the Millions, perhaps billions, who are stuk on Certainty.

Religion says, "Here are the answers"
Science says, "This is our best understanding in regards to your questions"

Many people just want a simple "Answer", not necessarily the truth of the matter.

wow, i felt wave after wave of embarrassment for that girl. man, she was annoying to try to understand.

either way, i think all she had to say was, "how is atheism less faith-based and more scientific than believing in a god?"

At first I was cutting her some slack because she was obviously nervous. I figured maybe she wasn't getting her point across due to that nervousness.

But they gave her an inordinate amount of time by the standards of some random person walking up to the mic at one of these events, she had waaaay more time to formulate and lock onto her point(s) than would normally be given. She never did. Everything she said was completely scatter-brained and vacuous, there was no point there whatsoever.

And I have always wondered, if theists think religion is so great... why is it that they think the most powerful criticism they can level at science or atheism or evolution or whatever is that it's "like a religion too" ?

Which of course it isn't. Well, let me agree that yes, some atheists do get to the point where they're treating figureheads with too much reverence, including Dawkins (who I've been a fan of for many many years) etc... atheists do get into a groupthink mindset sometimes. But the fundamental characteristics of something like science, atheism, what have you... are not religious at all. They are not nearly similar enough to justify the comparison, and the comparison is transparently just a little school yard "neener neener, I know you are but what am I" slice of stupidity.

Yeah Ive watched pretty much every dawkins speech/debate on youtube and some people are just sad...

There was the one "interview" with Al Jazeera where the host actually claimed he believes Moses flew to the moon on a winged horse, lol

How can you reason with these people? He has the patience of a saint (har har)

What she was trying to say:
The aggressiveness with which this new religion appears was described by the weekly news magazine Der Spiegel as a "crusade of the atheists". It is a crusade that mocks Christianity as the "God delusion" and classifies religion as a curse that is also to blame for all wars. You yourself have already spoken about a "subtle or even not so subtle aggression against the Church". Even without a totalitarian regime, you say that there is pressure today to think the way everybody thinks, that attacks against the Church show "how this conformity can really be a genuine dictatorship". Harsh words.

But the reality is in fact such that certain forms of behavior and thinking are being presented as the only reasonable ones and, therefore, as the only appropriately human ones. Christianity finds itself exposed now to an intolerant pressure that at first ridicules it – as belonging to a perverse, false way of thinking – and then tries to deprive it of breathing space in the name of an ostensible rationality.

It is very important for us to oppose such a claim of absoluteness conceived as a certain sort of "rationality". Indeed, this is not pure reason itself but rather the restriction of reason to what can be known scientifically – and at the same time the exclusion of all that goes beyond it. Of course it is true that historically there have been wars because of religion, too, that religion has also led to violence. . .

That's exactly the problem. It's like trying to teach basic math to a retarded person. The difference is, someone with mental retardation can't make the connection, a religious person refuses to make the connection.

It's kind of odd to hear a Catholic talk like that as they're usually pretty accepting of science.

I didn't think that was what she was trying to say. But she was a bit scattered, so I guess it's possible.

Maybe not exactly. But Pope Benedict was speaking about the fallacy that only what can be proven scientifically or with evidence is worth exploring, and that people who think this way are growing and mocking philosophy/religion. He seems to say this is a dictatorship in itself, i.e. 'show me' or what you say is worthless.

So what the woman was saying, science being a religion unto itself, is made more coherent by the Pope. The Pope is challenging people like Dawkins and saying we are capable of exploring things that are beyond hard evidence, and more related to spirit/philosophy.

I think she was more challenging the concept of pure logic/science as the source of all understanding. She seemed to accept most scientific conclusions but was rejecting Dawkins idea that unless it can be proven by evidence it is not truth.

Just to be clear I also think this woman is an idiot, I just don't think Dawkins is the be-all-end-all of philosophy. He is far on one side of the spectrum, which philosophy has been trending towards for hundreds of years now

it always amazes me how catholics actually got more religious by going to the US.

I mean it's not a religion that was created there, it was brought there by recent immigrants, like Sanctorum's father and stuff.
