Catholic Priests and marriage: Poll

Do you think Catholic priests should be allowed to marry?

Heck, I'll tack on this one too: show women be allowed to become priests.

BTW, it's not like any of this matters. The Vatican doesn't go by popular consensus, which it shouldn't, but at the same time they don't always follow the bible either.

Yes and yes. And repost.

The catholic church has serious problems including lack of clergy, lack of nuns, and sexually charged priests who a minority of which molest children. I'd have to think allowing marriage and gender equity would help all three of those major issues. It won't solve any of them, but it certainly would help relieve some of the pressure.

Plus, there is no logical reason to be against them. Lots of married people did major beneficial things in the churches past. So did lots of women.

Well I voted against letting women be priests. What they should do is just allow Nuns to hold masses.

i think so in both cases, definately for women priestessessses
the lack of priests is getting a lot worse for the next generation unless they change it

Except it is likey true. The catholic rules are putting the most sexually charged and sexually repressed people in close unsupervised care of helpless children. Relieving some of that sexual tension through a marriage will likely reduce the chance of molestation.

Plus, women priests would probably molest fewer children than male priests.

I think allowing priest to marry would provide many things that the church lacks and needs:

a) Opens the doors to a much larger base of people that would be interested in the profession (sorry if you don't like that terminology)

b) Puts a preist at equals or on the same level as his/her congregation. It's easier to relate to married couples when you yourself are married and to kids when you youself have kids.

I honestly think that you could get some very good Priests if you relaxed the whole "celibacy" thing. Allow them to marry, let them have kids. Allow them to be people.

The church needs to get with the times and look at what basically every other mainstream organized religion does.

At this point, the only reason they could still be "for" it is simply for the uniqueness factor of it. It's played out and an outdated mentality.

I go with the eastern church on this. I don't think priests should marry, but there shouldn't be any reason why a married man can't become a priest. As for women being priests, I don't see why not, and the same rule would apply as men.

I would let priests marry but women should not be priests. Nothing against women, but I am a Catholic and that really goes against the tradition of the church. I'm not as concerned about marriage because it was a stupid policy implemented by one of the Popes a long time ago, and at times was loosely followed anyways.

Not the Catholics. Something about an oath of celibacy...it doesn't seem to apply to little boys though.

If a black pope is elected, popes/presits will def marry, i dont think its posible fora black dude to be celibate.

I'm not religious but I'd say yes to #1. I would think it helps with the whole family thing they preach. seems odd a single person talking about marriage.
