Why aren't Catholic Priests allowed to marry? Maybe there wouldn't be so many sexual abuse cases out there if they were allowed to have some sexual release.

Maybe you should go do some research, as it's been somewhat documented in history.

Just another asinine rule. Nobody should be restricted from getting married. Whether or not it would reduce the amount of molestation is debatable. Abstinance does not always lead to pedophelia.

I wanted a quick and easy answer, and you all seem like smart people, so I asked you. I may do some research later if I have time.

It's a Catholic Church rule thing imposed waaaaaay back. There is really no reason why they can't other than the interpretation of what the Apostle Paul said that it is better for one not to marry so he (or she) can be more fully devoted to the works of God.

I personally think they should be allowed to marry.

Think about this.

A priest marries, has legal children, then dies. What happens to his estate ? hmmmm!

The real reason is to keep all properties within the grasp of Rome. I was raised Catholic and
have done some research.

Pretty self-explaniatory...

Matthew 6:24, "No man can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other: or he will sustain the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."

Except that priests know going in that they will be unable to marry. It's not like anyone's forcing them to a) become a priest or b) remain a priest once they are one. Life's all about choices and deciding if you can live with the choices you make or not. Molesting children has NOTHING to do with being unable to marry.

Wrong. For many years priests did marry. In the middle ages the church got into a scandal that invovled traveling priests who's wives had to do various things to support themselves (read prostitution, etc), this was since the church would not pay the living expenses of the wives. The church had two choices, start paying for the living expenses of priests wives or disallow marriage. As the good business it is, the church decided that it was better to disallow marriage.

St. Augustine and St. Paul (not the apostle) had a lot to do with so-called chastity - they were some really strange individuals.

They just had this topic on the History channel. It was extremely interesting. I don't recall anything about traveling married priests and their wives turning to prostitution, but maybe they discussed it while I was making a refrig raid.

Have you guys also wondered why Superman will stand there while someone is shooting at him with a gun and letting bullets bounce off his chest. But as soon as the bad guy runs out of bullets, he throws his gun at Superman, and then Superman dodges out of the way of the gun? I mean Superman was just standing there while a guy shoots him, but apartently the actual gun hurts Superman, because he has to dodge out of the way. Hmmmmm.... Another interesting question.

marriage is no impediment to a pedophile or
anyone else inclined to sexual sins/crimes,
regardless of their nominal religion.

married Anglican, Episcopalian, and Lutheran ministers
have been allowed to become Catholic priests while
staying married, btw.

Eastern (rather than Roman) Catholic priests may be ordained
in the Eastern church if married.
