Cats keeping us up!

Is there any way to keep cats from turning on motion lights? We have cats on the farm here (please hold the get rid of them thoughts until someone comes up with a mouse trap that works better!) and they keep turning on the security lights.

Sometimes this sets off the neighbor's dogs which are HUGE afghan wolfhounds that have barks like fog horns! I'm awake now because of this and it's getting old. :|

The dogs are good because they let you know if someone is coming around too so I don't know what do do.

Buy infrared motion detection lights. You can set them to not pickup small animals. There expensive though i think.

I believe most motion sensors have a sensitivity setting, although setting them to not pick up cats will probably make them more cranky about picking up humans, especially those darn neighbor's kids.

try this? You can tape off part of the sensor to reduce sensitivity, maybe start taping it from the bottom up.

I'd be surprised if his lights aren't already IR...after all, they work at night, don't they?

Eat some cat food, down a beer, and huff some glue. I'm told the internal chemical reaction makes you feel very ill, and your only recourse is to pass out.

Do you have security lights for convenience or because you're paranoid? If they aren't that important replace them with regular lights. If you're afraid of being robbed it sounds like the dogs are good enough. Either the lights or the cats have to go, decide which.

Well if they are it doesnt matter much. That IR detector ignores pets. Also thats the only way i can think of fixing it, the tape would probably also work.

No it's just convenient to have them when you need to go out to the woodpile or need something from the barn. Those dogs are on a wireless fence and will run through it to rip a trespasser a new one so no worries about that at all. It does seem like those lights come on if a mouse farts now since we had a bad lightning storm a few months ago. A month after that we lost a well pump so it probably ah heck'd something up with the lights because the cats haven't gotten that much bigger from fall harvest.

Oh, passive. Yeah, that's different. Most motion detectors are active, and so they are much more sensitive to small moving objects.

That looks like a good detector but 12V and a relay is a bit much to hook up at four places.

The detectors are about 10 years old and made by intermatic. They are metal fixtures not the plastic ones and have been working great up until about a month ago.

Yeah, newer lights will have sensitivity sensors. There's a similar one at my dad's house that simply went on the fritz like yours. You're better off offsetting the minor cost with sweet, sweet sleep.

you may have to take off the cover plate to see the controls. otherwise, just replace the fixtures / motion switches with ones that can be adjusted.

Some motion light sensors can have their sensitivity adjusted. Also change their angle slightly so its more likely for a walking human to trigger them instead of a little cat.

turn off your motion lights
