The funny part is, I pay $60 for cable I don't watch. I'm actually already scheduled to have them cancel my cable in a couple of weeks when I move.
So you're paying for something you don't use while he's not paying for something he does use. Sounds like you're mad because he's making you look like a chump.

Meh, screw you guys. You can justify it all you want, but I don't completely agree. It might not be as bad as stealing a $700 physical object, but its still wrong.

You should tell Time Warner, OP. Imagine if some guy that knew we were being fed bad information about Iraq had told someone: we wouldn't have invaded Iraq. Imagine if you saw a little girl getting into a car that matched the description from an Amber alert.

The people saying "don't snitch" are the people that stood by and did nothing while the holocaust took place in Europe. Remember, all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

This is exactly the same situation OP, Nebor is right. Do you want the Iraq war on your conscience, Leros? Do you?

I wouldn't. I'm not the time Warner police and people who do that kind of shit get caught eventually anyway. They're getting free cable but they have to be perpetually worried that it will be cut off and they'll be charged with theft of services or something. You're paying not only for cable but for the right to sit back and enjoy it with no worries in the back of your mind regarding it.

Honestly, getting it for free wouldn't be worth the worry it would cause me. I'm certainly not jealous of anyone who is getting it free, unless they're doing it with the consent of the cable company.

The cable company has $700 less than they should.

If you ask me, if it's possible to get something while not taking anything away from anyeon, and if you wouldn't pay for it if you couldn't get it for free, then there simply is no moral fault. If someone wants you to pay for something that a) you can get for free, and b) does not cost them or anyone else anything to give away, you can tell them to go fishing and find a better business model. Yes, I think in principle, there's nothing wrong with software piracy when you wouldn't pay for it in the first place. If anything, trying out the software increases the likelihood that you will pay for that particular software later, buy software from that particular company later, and let others know how awesome that software is so they can buy it later.

But I do agree that breaking the lock on the cable box, and using a company's upload which costs them money are, in principle, unethical actions. Your neighbor is slightly lacking in moral principles. But it's not something you should be bothered by. Worse things happen every second of every day. If you want to make a difference that means something to you or someone else, there are better ways to spend your time.

Not worried about the neighbor, but apparently there is a TW tech that is running a business on the side, selling hundreds, perhaps thousands of illegal connections.

He is the one that needs to be stopped for that will raise rates for everyone.

So, again, why did you bother asking? It seems clear to me that you already made up your decision...so why bother even asking?

I pay $700+ a year for my cable. If somebody stole a $700 television from a Best Buy, I bet you guys wouldn't be saying the same thing.
Someone here recently got $20-$45 back from Newegg because UPS doesn't have submersible delivery trucks.

Everyone jumped on him like he was bragging about having sex with puppies.

Edit: Found it.

Just let it be, OP.

At our old place, the cable junction box for our cul de sac wasn't locked. We've always only had basic cable, so I remedied that situation by removing the trap. The difference between "basic cable" and the next tier up is that they install a small device on the line that filters out the channels that you aren't supposed to have.

Shrug. I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Not quite the same as the OP though.

Once when we got our cable switched to a new place, the tech just didn't bother to install a trap. Should I have called to tell them their mistake? lol.

The trap in this place is up on the pole, so it's not like I'm going to grab my ladder and climb up there. But if they practically invite it, I'll oblige.

IMO, this type of theft is an order of magnitude less unethical than even downloading software or music. I doubt there's a single person on here that can say they haven't downloaded illegal MP3s or software.

Cable company is gonna find out anyways. The best the guy can hope for is basic service. Everything else requires a digital receiver that is registered to the company.

The neighbor is cloning the MAC of a provisioned device. There has been lots of detection methods to strictly approve legit MAC to subscriber area so someone across the country tries to tap in with a clone will be denied.
