The law is pretty simple and would only be applied in very few cases.

1. Your child is missing for 48 hours and you think their safety may be at risk then you must report it to the police.
2. Your child died in an accident then you must report it to the police within 24 hours.

Simple stuff. I don't think it imposing too much for people to report missing or dead children.

If this was such a good idea, why wasn't it suggested before she was found innocent? Here's a hint: because it's a zealous over-reaction to a verdict that wasn't favourable. In Colorado they're proposing you have to notify police that a child is dead within ONE HOUR. Let's hope that there's a stipulation for kids who are already in the hospital and parents of children who die of SIDS (time of death is approx. 3am, they didn't call the police until 9am).

Oh and in case you missed it - Casey Anthony is going to jail. You're effectively passing a law to protect against something that has never happened.

Haven't heard much from ProfJohn in a while...

SOP for him. When proven wrong, he bails and goes to one of the other 4-5 troll threads he creates daily. He just keeps hopping around and starting more troll threads, so he always has a couple free to move to when proved wrong.

I'll say it again... Would anyone have introduced a bill like this if CA was found guilty? No.

"You don't know that!"

Yes I do... It's simple. Did anyone propose this law BEFORE the verdict? No. It's a knee jerk reaction to a botched trial and an unpopular verdict. And for those of you who are screaming about needing a law like this for situations like this. SituationS? Why do you think this trial was such a huge story? I'll tell you. Because it doesn't happen every day. Most infanticide cases are pretty cut and dried. This case was unique.

We don't need a law. It'll never apply to CA. It won't add any time to her jail sentence. The thought that it will come into play again as it MIGHT have in this case seems more than just remote. It's a bad idea. I guarantee there will be unintended negative consequences. Just let it go.

One question:

Now that this case has shown if you do kill your child all you must really do to get away Scot-free is fail to report the kid missing and hide the body long enough for natural decay to destroy the evidence so that cause of death cannot be determined, do you think anybody might try this and hope or the same results as Casey Anthony?

If it is a possibility, what do you do to stop it?

Personally I think there should be some penalty for the legally responsible parent/guardian who fails to report a 2 or 3 year old child, who is incapable of caring for themselves, that has gone missing. I'm quite surprised there isn't already.

Oh yea sure, I follow! Because of this court decision, mothers all over this country have opened themselves up to the possibility of killing their children! It's all because of this case. This is what is motivating them to kill their children.

No, I do not believe for an instance someone who was ready and willing to kill her child will stop and think "What Would Casey Anthony Do?"

How is this 'big government' ??

I am opposed to murder too, is that a big government law??

Yea, well, I *do* have a problem with more and more and more laws and regulations that basically say the state is the parent of every child.

No matter what you try to do with the laws, there will *always* be exceptions and other special situations. So why is this one case trial that has never happened before, why can't this be the exception to the norm?

Life will never be perfect for every person. There comes a time where you must choose the freedoms of 99.999999% of the people, over the safety of 0.00000001% of the people.

And, seriously, this proposed law does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to protect the child. If the parent murders the child, this law does absolutely nothing to protect a dead child. The child is dead. This law isn't reversing that.

You say you're against murder. Well congratulations I'm so thankful we have you around! But, this law doesn't prevent murder.

Well... That's all fine and dandy except the girl wasn't missing. She was dead. Her mom knew exactly where she was. She lied to the police about it. She was convicted of that.

She SHOULD have been convicted of murder/man slaughter but the prosecution failed in epic style.

So once again... knee jerk law... wouldn't have applied in this situation. Won't ever be applied later. Unique situation with little chance of seeing it again. No law needed.

Yes she should have been convicted except it wasn't the prosecution that failed. It was the brain dead jury that couldn't figure out the answer to 2+2+? Worst abortion of a jury than in the OJ Fiasco.

You're being silly.

A 1999 US Department of Justice study concluded that between 1976 and 1997 in the United States, mothers were responsible for a higher share of children killed during infancy while fathers were more likely to have been responsible for the murders of children age 8 or older.[1] Furthermore, 52% of the children killed by their mothers were male (maternal filicide), while 57% of the children killed by their fathers were male (paternal filicide). 61% of children murdered under the age of five were murdered by their parents; filicide is the third leading cause of death amongst American children five to fourteen years old.

The critical difference being when a jury makes a mistake its direct effects are limited to the one case. When legislators make a mistake it can impact thousands of cases before being fixed - if it ever is.

Nah, just see nothing left to add to this thread...

Do I have to respond every time someone offers something?

Here is my problem with this law, IMHO it's another Patriot Act where we lose a lot of our freedom pretty easily.

First...say a parent has shared custody and plays the 'I thought the other parent' had the kid.

You'd then get the next level where these bleeding hearts now want those with shared custody to 'register' the exchange.

This could then easily extend to all family members.

Pretty far-fetched, but so are a lot of our laws today if looked at in the past decade+'s eyes.

We are heading towards a police state.

Really?

And what does that link show? It's all percentages based off an unspecified base number. "61% of children murdered under the age of five were murdered by their parents;" Okay, that means pretty much nothing unless you know what percentage of children under the age of five are murdered.

This is a stupid law that is being proposed.

You don't create these laws because then you end up with this:
http://www2.wsls.com/lifestyles/2011/jul/19/pa-mom-sues-blames-poppy-seeds-for-drug-test-ar-1182408/

The world ain't perfect. There will always be horrible things that go on. But I believe these laws, all piled up together, create a worse world for us to live in.

Totally anecdotal story here - listening to the radio not too long ago, topic was child services, woman called in with her story when she drove up to a convenience store, left her 10 year old kid in the car while she went in to buy something. Parked right in front of the entrance, store windows leaving the car always in view. Some busy-body called DCS and the next day DCS shows up at her doorstep and takes her child away. And this woman has to go fight against DCS.

And yes I have to use silly arguments compared to Caylee Anthony, because, well, that is a unique situation. It's quite simple - if you are found guilty of murdering your child you go to jail. If you were found not-guilty of murdering your child, you do not go to jail. The crime is murder, not failure to report.
