Oh look, it took exactly one reply for this to turn into a Bush-bash.

Asked to resign were Senior Vice President Betsy West, who supervised CBS News primetime programs; 60 Minutes Wednesday Executive Producer Josh Howard; and Howard?s deputy, Senior Broadcast Producer Mary Murphy. The producer of the piece, Mary Mapes, was terminated.
Mary "Mary, Quite Pro Kerry" Mapes got exactly what she deserved. Rancid witch.

2:1 odds says she'll be at PBS within 90 days.

Hmmm... so when are we going to see firings in the Dept. of Education for the Armstrong Williams con-game? Or better yet an investigation as to how far up those decisions went? (As if I have to ask.)

Nice strawman. Now stick to the topic at hand please. Thanks.

I'm wondering if they are still going to keep Rather on for special reports and such. Does he escape blame? He afterall was the "reporter" and one of the biggest chearleaders defending the forged docs.

Oh well...

My guess is Mapes will go to CNN, but I'm sure PBS would jump at the chance to get someone like her.

agreed - while I don't like Bush it does no good to have poorly backed up sources when trying to expose his character and history. This report did him more good than harm by showing how desperate some people are to smear him so that even people citing credible sources are more likely to be dismissed now.....

In my opinion, I think CBS will probably keep Rather for the special reports, etc. His reputation is still somewhat intact to those who haven't closely followed this story.

Mapes could possibly wind up with a CNN job. However, in my opinion again, they may look at her like damaged goods. While many criticize CNN for a leftist tilt, by and large, I think the organization is close to fair with the news. Just my opinion though.

I knew this report was due for release. Thanks for posting, CAD. We sure didn't need to bump that 700+ post thread up again.

EDIT: I just downloaded the report. Will check it out later tonight.

The CBS report available at the cbs.com site is without appendices. However, Dick Thornburgh's law firm has posted the exhibits and appendices on its website

[Hat tip: Michelle Malkin]

Should make for interesting reading. A number of folks will undoubtedly analyze this shining example of reckless liberalism run amok, and provide feedback.

Apparently, old Mary "Mary Quite Pro Kerry" Mapes embraced some of the anti-Bush net loons out there.

Page 212:

2. The Anti-Bush Sources

Many of the sources of information that were used for the September 8 Segment had an anti-Bush political agenda. First, Lieutenant Colonel Burkett was a visible and outspoken critic of President Bush. Second, Mapes and Smith also relied on Linda Starr to assist in obtaining the documents from him. Her website was and still is filled with anti-Bush statements. Third, it appears that Mapes first came to learn about Linda Starr and her possible link to TexANG records from Paul Lukasiak, another anti-Bush blogger. Fourth, Ben Barnes appeared on the September 8 Segment to claim that he provided assistance to President Bush to gain entry to the TexANG. Barnes was a well-known supporter of, and fundraiser for, Senator Kerry?s presidential campaign.

Page 213:

4. Kerry Campaign Connections

The Panel reports elsewhere about Mapes? contacts with the Kerry campaign. Mapes informed the Panel that she did not think that her request to have someone from the Kerry campaign call Lieutenant Colonel Burkett would result in anything that would assist the Kerry campaign.119 Mapes also told the Panel that she was seeking to use the Kerry campaign, and specifically her opening the door to Lockhart, as a means of persuading Lieutenant Colonel Burkett to provide additional documents in support of the September 8 Segment.

Much, much more coming later.

I'll be posting a thread just like this when those in the WH get canned for outing CIA operatives etc.

Of course, we will all be dead of old age when that comes.

I believe in the goose and gander theory. You do something major league wrong, you get canned be it WH or CBS.

The panel said a "myopic zeal" to be the first news organization to broadcast a groundbreaking story about Mr. Bush?s National Guard service was a key factor in explaining why CBS News had produced a story that was neither fair nor accurate and did not meet the organization?s internal standards.

The report said at least four factors that some observers described as a journalistic ?Perfect Storm? had contributed to the decision to broadcast a piece that was seriously flawed.

"The combination of a new 60 Minutes Wednesday management team, great deference given to a highly respected producer and the network?s news anchor, competitive pressures, and a zealous belief in the truth of the segment seem to have led many to disregard some fundamental journalistic principles," the report said.

It is really too bad that Rather's career with CBS ends on this note...

But he earned it.

Who really cares about it at this point? I'm still waiting to find out "the rest of the story" about GWB which was the real issue here.

The truth is out there and will probably come out someday. I hope I live to see hear about it.

No kidding. This was pretty much just fluff and was a non-story back then. What I'm eager to find out is when are we going to get an answer as to who leaked Valerie Plame's name.

Its too bad every 'organization' doesn't hold itself to this standard... Unfortunately, I know quite a few 'organizations' that refuse to accept responsibility when their 'employees' screw up.. repeatedly..
