OK, that is what I get for not watching what I am typing. My Core is at 360 and Mem is at 330. Sorry for the confusion. Yea, I would have been pretty psyched to get my memory to 360! Not sure what the limit on this card is yet, those were just my first setting and I have not pushed it any further. Played Call of Duty for a few hours at these settings and had no artifacts and no lock ups. I will see exactly what it will do tomorrow when I have a bit more time.

I bought a 9800Pro from BB last week for $299. I went ahead and picked up a 9800NP at CC today to compare with the 9800Pro. The NP came with the infineon 3.0 memory and can only hit 331, the core on the other hand hits 447!!!
I am going to keep this one and take my 9800Pro back to BB. Its an awesome card.

LOL..that's more in line with the rest of us. 330 is pretty much what my card maxes out on as well and Call of Duty runs with no corruption.

I am soooo close to modding my card using the Infineon RAM BIOS. It bumps the core to 380 (same as the pro) and the memory to 325 (only 15mhz slower than the pro). It also lowers the memory timing, and it may be possible to push the RAM even further.

OMG, I love you guys!!!

I went to CC looking for this card, but they were sold out. I had the guy check stock in other CC stores and he said they were sold out all around LA, but he could probably special order it. I said I'd check other stores first to see if they had it. I went to BB and they were sold out of all the 9800NP's also, BUT... there was a 9800Pro 128 on the shelf. I got them to PM the 9800Pro to the $199.99 CC price for the 9800NP using the ad from CC.

Bottom line, I walked out the door with a 9800Pro for $216.49 thanks to you guys and this post.

Slick! I wonder how many BB employees would actually realize the difference between the two cards. I'm willing to bet that more than 50% wouldn't know or wouldn't give a damn! Certainly worth a shot but too late for me--I already snagged the NP at CC.

Thanks for the idea Arfboy! I went to BB and got away with the same sleight of hand. The CSR that I dealt with called CC in an effort to find out if the two 9800's were different. But the CC description in the flyer is quite vague---no photo; just says "9800 128MB SDRAM." That could describe either one. With the line behind me getting longer and longer, she finally gave up and PM'd the little beauty.

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro $216.49! Sweeeeet!

Hehe, I didn't have to deal with a CSR. The cashier tried to send me to the customer service dept at first, but my friend and I were friendly with her and we got her to do it on the spot for us. She just glanced at the ad, didn't look at the model number, didn't bother to get a manager approval, didn't call CC, and even apologized for trying to send us to a CSR earlier. It's cool what you can get away with when you talk to people nicely.

I'm glad it worked for you. This deal scorches all the other 9800 deals out right now... if you can get away with it.

Both paid for the card, how's that stealing? BB does the same to its customers all the time so I dont' see how it's any different for someone to do it to BB. Good job guys!

Deceiving? And how would this be different from everyone who gets away with price-matches or stack coupons upon coupons in situations where it's clearly against company policies? Pouncing on "deals" where the retailer posted a pricing error? Like these situations, I benefited from the mistake of the company. I "stole" nothing. My receipt clearly states a 9800Pro for $199.99 and that's exactly what I paid. If you're really that bored, I'm sure there are dozens of posts that "screw" companies in this forum you could also reply to.

Hi everyone,

I got in on this deal and bought this card at CC and I have never overclocked a videocard before... but from what you guys are all saying, it sounds almost too easy to pass up.

I'd rather not flash it's BIOS or do anything to it that can kill it

I took a look at it's RAM and wrote it down:

Samsung 319
k4d26323ra-gc2a

What's this mean, exactly? Is this thing overclockable, and if so, how would I go about doing it?

Thanks for your help.

Samsung memory... lucky dog.

You need to download and install a utility like rage3d tweaker or radclocker. You can find them by doing a Google search. Once installed, run the programs or go to display properties > settings > advanced and start bumping up your core (GPU) clock at about 5MHz intervals, testing for stability at each bump. When you start to get artifacts or run into problems, back don a couple MHz. Once you have maxed out the core speed, starting bumping and testing the memory. Once the memory is maxed you are done. Good luck.

Please post your serial number. Does it start with 16?

"got away with the same sleight of hand. "

Sounds like deception to me.

This isn't a company advertising the wrong price then doing the honorable thing and selling the product at a loss.

This is you trying to get a minimum wage sales clerk to screw up and screw BB out of $200.

Personaly I would not do this, and the fact that you don't think you did something wrong just boggles my mind.

Think I'll go out and see if maybe I can walk out if the store with a 9800XT. If the sales clerk does not stop me that would be BB's fault right?

For those in the Bay Area:

The CC in San Mateo, CA had two 9800NPs in the display case around lunchtime today.

Be prepared for a unusually long checkout, though. Their inventory systems say they have no 9800NPs in stock, so the garden-variety checkout clerk will need the store manager to help ring you up.

I just went to the San Mateo Circuit City and there are no more 9800np. In fact i special ordered one and when i went there to pick it up, they said that the system says that they have 3 in the store, but they could not find any.

Looks like what happened is that they accidentally released the ones that people had special ordered and people bought it up. Last time i will special order anything from circuit city.

Anyone buying 9800nps from CC should look for a S/N that begins with a 160 (or at least NOT a 180) as it SEEMS that the older the card (i.e., the "lower" the S/N) the better your chances SHOULD be of getting 2.8ns RAM.

tooltime...reported you can flash with RAM rated 3.0ns and lower, but I believe many more people have problems trying to flash RAM slower than 2.8 ns. Let's face it...a 9800np is still a great card for under $200, but it would be even BETTER if could be flashed to 9800 pro speeds for <$200

About the BB swindle: Didn't the box clearly say 9800 _PRO_ ? Even if not dont' they barcode scan and it comes up as 9800 Pro? I'm thinking you got very lucky with your deal, but if they're falling for it, their loss, of course this means every single BB store will be out of 9800's, pro or non =(

I'm more pissed that your taking a 9800 Pro away from someone who would actually pay the actual price for it. But I guess I can't blame you too much either. BB overcharge grossly for almost everything they carry, a 200$ for a pro is a good deal, but it's still probably not cutting into their profits.

I think that they were saying that the add didn't exclusively say non-pro.
