If the model number on the back starts with LTR or if it says "SmartBurn" on the box then it's a lite-on.. otherwise it is not...

the reason it's so cheap is because CC has had that one for a long time...flip the box over, and look at the bottom right hand corner of the back. it will give a model number. make sure it starts with LTR.

Chances are not many locations have these, the fact that it's .95 means it's going out of program, and CC will not be carrying that product anymore. my store has been out of that one for ages.

I don't wanna open it up just yet to check a model number. On the box on the back it has Part #CDCICD00117 and a serial and UPC number. Can I tell from any of those? Has Nero Burning Rom on the outside also.

This drive is identical with the MSI model CR40-A2 (MS-8340S), and you can burn the MSI firmware to it, making it much more reliable. This made a big difference for me. I burned the 1.20D firmware, and all functions of the drive work just great. This drive now reports as an MSI as well. Of course, you know it's a risk and I don't guarantee it works for you. The newer firmware made my drive compatible with my cheapo AT&T 40x CD-Rs, among others.

ok, I just picked one up in state college, pa, mine says BurnProtection Technology but the model number is LTR-40125S, so which drive is this, the MSI or the Lite-On?

That's not the MSI, and might be a LITE-ON. Don't try to burn the MSI firmware on it, you might ruin it.

My drive model number is vbt401248a.....
Im going to install it and let you know what it says in device manager and sandra...

My old liteon drive says liteon, but this one says verbatim, I wonder why they do that?

You can tell if its a lite-on from the outside of the box if the serial # is 12 digits long, with all numbers.

My local CC (B'klyn NYC) has it in their computers at $19, but they were sold out. I'm gonna try others to see if they have it, and if they do...showtime.

Hey I found CDN CDICD00118 on the CC website which is a CenDyne 48x burner on clearance for $29.99 for online or B&M purchase.

EDIT: Apparently you can't order it online for that price as it shows up as $69.99, but it says "Was $69.99, Now $29.99, Save $40! Free Shipping! Clearance Item - While Supplies Last!" Perhaps if you call in or find a B&M store with stock it will work.

i've yet to see a 48x Cendyne be a liteon. all of the ones through my store have been AOpen or....i forget the other one but it's model starts with a CW.

PS the Aopen one sucks, it's in my comp right now. it will sometimes spin a blank CD super fast and loud...it won't eject until i turn the comp off. even jamming a paper clip in the release hole doesn't do anything.

I have an Aopen one. 24x I got back when compusa was selliing em for 20 on one of the radio sales.
Mine works well, in fact I researched on it and have read a couple of good reviews about Aopen cdrws. I guess it also depends on one's luck, I used to have an Aopen cdrom which would at times just stop reading a cd after spinning up, messing things like installs and game playing for me.
Just my 0.02

PS: Searched for this in ATL, GA area, no luck.
