Well how to put this. If your aim is that you "clean" of your windows in a way you have to do a reinstall than you are dead on the mark.
Unless you realy know what you are cleaning exaclty and how it efects every other aspect of your windows than you may can use such tool properly. If your only contribution to the cleaning process is that you click on a button like "select all" then you are activly destroying your windows!
I know from experience on supporting normal consumer pc that such "cleaning tools" do more harm than good. The standard settings are very good for an average Joe PC-user and some small settings which are in some cases right to do you can do without such "cleaning tools".
Beside from malware such "tools" can destroy your system quickier than you can say "clean"! There should be on every atempt to "clean" a big fat warning sign "This ain't a toy! You will destroy your system very thouroughly if you don't know what you are dooing! Click on yes to destroy your system."

Did you select all unsafe entries too? Actually any registry cleaner could cause any PC trouble. In fact HP had a line of PC's years ago that when 1 key was removed, you could not boot and that key was apparently deemed safe for removal by Crap Cleaner..back when CCleaner was called that.
Most enthusiasts who are smart would never recommend using registry cleaners and often they are not needed. However I was recommending the disk cleaner, not the reg cleaner. The disk cleaner from Wise works very thorough at removing junk and can remove the windows update patch files that are no longer needed after a successful patch. Also has a defragmenter, but there is no reg cleaner attached to it, it's seperate for a reason and reg cleaners should only be used as a last resort.
There is another freeware app I like that can fix many common PC problems, tweaking.com windows repair. It's nice to have in your arsenal for actual problems as it can revert many of your registry settings to default, fix file permissions, firewall issues...etc. It can save from a complete reinstall sometimes. Though it's not a great idea to use anything unless you are experiencing trouble of some sort.
I didn't like it for 2 reasons:
1) Wise Registry Cleaner destroyed my computer a few months back after cleaning my PC with it. Wise Disk Cleaner comes from the same company
2) I couldn't find how to add a custom folder to clean easily such as:
C:\Windows\Software Distribution\Download
That folder contains all the temp windows updates which are on longer needed after they are installed

Over the years I've used CCleaner about 50 times. I'm the go to guy for the family computers from Win3.1 to Win 8.1. Only once the registry cleaning caused a problem and the restore of the backup registry worked fine.

exactly!! CC all the way!SlimCleaner frequently installs a ton of malware on the system without asking for your permission. If you put SlimCleaner on your computer, I strongly recommend removing it completely and then do a full scan with Malwarebytes to get rid of all of the other crap that it added.
Don't mean to come across as harsh, but you resurrected a 2 1/2 year old thread to ask that? In any event, no, it doesn't do auto-backups in the sense of always creating a backup when you run the registry cleaner, but it's basically close enough. There is an option setting (that defaults to "on") that forces the program to ask if you want it to create a back-up before it actually changes anything when you run the registry cleaner.
