CCleaner vs SlimCleaner

Wise Disk Cleaner and Wise Registry Cleaner are separate, unless possibly bundled in Wise Care 365.
I run the following with no probz on win7;

The average user might still "destroy" their system. Restoring a registry backup is not something everyone can do, especially if the system has become unbootable and you have to manually load the registry hives and edit the registry offline.

I didn't suggest that anyone use a registry cleaner of any sort on a regular basis for general maintenance purposes, I was just answering the poster's question about CCleaner's behavior. Personally, I can't remember the last time I used it. It's been a long time, but it was most likely when I had to clean up the traces of some program or other that didn't uninstall gracefully on its own.

On my own sytstems I find third party "cleaners" pretty pointless. It's not like Windows uncontrollably poops out random "crap" files all over the drive that only some specialized utility can track down and clean. It's not black magic if you know how Windows works and where it stores files.

Well, yeah, but why deal with the hassle of digging through all the directories yourself when there's a useful, customizable and otherwise completely harmless, non-resource-hogging (not to mention free) utility to do it for you? I could create tables, footnotes and indices in documents with Notepad, too, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to when I have Word available to automatically handle the formatting for me...

As for CCleaner generally, I run it many times a day, basically after visits to every few major commercial websites (the sort that love to drop a gajillion cookies, web beacons and all that other crap on your HD with wild abandon) and I certainly wouldn't want to have to go digging through the various system folders to do what it does in a few seconds with a couple of clicks of a mouse button.

I once was a strong "supporter" for registry cleaners...but now realize that they're nonsense. A "bloated" registry won't make your PC "slower", not with any halfway modern system.

What could make sense is fixing incorrect registry entries that could at some point cause problems, but overall I am now thinking the value of registry cleaners something very low on my priority list.

That was probably your biggest issue. You really can't run a registry cleaner without being fairly careful about specifying the clean-up parameters and then, preferably, making it step through the proposed corrections with confirmation for each one, or at least each set/class of them. Just clicking "OK" and letting it run wild is pretty much asking for trouble, though I do admit that software distributors all too often imply, or state outright, that their utilities are "magic bullets" of some sort. They're useful utilities in their place, but definitely not something you want to run "just because" or if your machine is "sluggish" (whatever exactly that's supposed to mean) for undiagnosed reasons...

I have never used SlimCleaner before. I always use CCleaner. It works well for me.

Agreed ... been using it for a LONG time too and never had a problem with the cleaning aspect at least.

CCleaner is OK for cleaning temp files, and cookies, and stuff, but I don't do registry cleaners.

CCleaner is great for cleaning up rando temp files. I use it mainly to speed up virus scans on mechanical drives (SSDs too but the effect is much less pronounced) by deleting all the tiny temp files browsers and other apps leave laying around the filesystem that really slow virus/malware scans down. I never touch the registry cleaning function, though. Reg cleaners are a bad idea IMO.

For freeing up space I use Spacesniffer, which quickly shows you what's taking up room on your drives.

They're both snake oil. The only thing that CCleaner has going for it is that it doesn't make any dodgy claims about how much good it will do for your system (AFAIK).

I've been burned by registry cleaners too many times in the past (problems always start after cleaning) to even recommend any.

CCleaner is ok for cleaning program caches and other temp files.
