Satire, or not, it isn't in good taste at all. And people that think that way usually only play it off as a joke after they get confronted about it.

Yeah am sure some people who have jobs agree with this worthless piece of crap. See what I just did there?

People get too easily offended nowadays. Sit back, relax and have a nice cup of aborted fetus puree.

That's clearly satire. People need to lighten up.

No kidding. Sounds like a lot of people can't recognize that.
It is absolutely blantantly obvious that it's "satire", but that doesn't justify it in any way, especially for a sensitive matter like this.
It's exactly that kind of hyper-sensitivity that encourages satire. When you try to make a topic "off limits" someone will eventually point out the ridiculousness of that kind of social pseudo-censorship.

Moral issues aside, he already fails on logic...

Well, this is more of a personal look on it. But I was talking to a girl once and she's one of those constant complainers... ya know, the kind that say, "How're you doing" and you just say "good." You never respond "good, how about you?" to them, because you know they're just going to complain! Well, one time this girl told me about how she was raped by a guy... (albeit that being a weird thing to just bring up in a conversation... "Hey, how're you?" "Oh not too bad, thinking about how I was raped a year ago, but not too bad!").

So, I expected this girl to be a bit ravishing... a regular ol' booty (beauty ) queen. My dreams were shattered quite haphazardly by such an assumption. Even though such a thing doesn't prove (even remotely) that ugly (or in this girl's case, large and in charge) girls get raped the most, but it certainly hit home for me :Q.

I think Brandon's a bit ticked that he got out-scooped by this newb reporter .

Haven't read it yet:

Rape Only Hurts If You Fight It

Most people today would claim that rape is a terrible crime almost akin to murder, but I strongly disagree. Far from a vile act, rape is a magical experience that benefits society as a whole. I realize many of you will disagree with this thesis, but lend me your ears and I?m sure I?ll sway you towards a darkened alley.

If it weren?t for rape, Western Civilization might not exist as we know it today. When the Romans were faced with a disproportionate ratio of women to men in the early kingdom, they had to do something, lest their fledgling society die for lack of sons. To solve their little dilemma, they did what any reasonable man would do: they threw a festival for their Sabine neighbors, and then stole and raped their women. It?s quite logical; in fact I don?t understand why the settlers at Plymouth didn?t do the same to the local Indians?it certainly would have saved on shipping costs.

Obviously, in the case of the Rape of the Sabines, rape was a tremendous help to society. The Sabine women, for their part, didn?t seem to mind so much, as they threw themselves between their brutish old Sabine husbands and their charming new Roman ones to prevent bloodshed when the Sabine men came to reclaim their wives. Yet even when society was totally against a rape, the raunchy act has benefited society too. Where would the Romans be, after all, if it weren?t for the Rape of Lucretia infuriating the people to the point of overthrowing their last king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus? If it weren?t for that event, the world might never have had the Roman Republic for a pristine example of a flawless government.

Rape?s glorious advantages are not, however, exclusively found from 2,000-year-old examples. In actuality, rape?s advantages can very much be seen today. Take ugly women, for example. If it weren?t for rape, how would they ever know the joy of intercourse with a man who isn?t drunk? In a society as plastic-conscious as our own, are we really to believe that some man would ever sleep with a girl resembling a wildebeest if he didn?t have a few schnapps in him? Of course he wouldn?t?at least no self-respecting man would?but there in lies the beauty of rape. No self-respecting man would rape in the first place, so ugly women are guaranteed a romp with not only a sober man, but a bad boy too; and we all know how much ladies like the bad boy.

Ugly women are not, however, the only people who benefit from rape?prisoners enjoy its many perks too. What, after all, could possibly be more boring than spending years of your life confined to some tiny cell 23 hours a day? The answer, of course, is spending years of your life confined to some tiny cell 23 hours a day and never getting some hot action. With rape, prisoners never have to worry about that. Instead, they merely need worry about treating their rapists with enough love and respect to earn a quick reach-around.

But if there is one bread and butter reason for why rape should not only be accepted, but even endorsed, it is because our news editors are in dire need of interesting stories for our front page. Bookstore stories? Fossils? One dollar coins? Please. Now, some saucy circle-jerk rape action? Yeah, that?s the ticket.

Edit: I guess he's trying to make a point about the types of stories that get the most attention from the media. Meh.

Methinks more college students need to brush up on their Swift, to see how offensive, and brilliant satire really can be...

not that I'm saying this student, or his work is near the calibre of A modest Proposal, or Gulliver...but good satire can be offensive, and shocking. Of course, rape...wth was he thinking? There is no social injustice involved in the criminality of rape.

Who determines what is in good taste as far as satire goes.

This was not a case of 'oh yeah I was just joking'....it was written to create a reaction. Just his "ugly women" line should have been enough for anyone with 1/2 a brain to know it was tongue in cheek.

I am thinking there are too many bleeding hearts out there that want to stomp out all freedom if it doesn't fit their molds.

It's not that it's in good taste or not ... it's just not funny.

For how to do a funny skit on rape, see George Carlin.

"They'll say 'You can't joke about rape, rape's not funny.' I say **** you, I think it's hilarious, how do you like that? I can prove to you that rape is funny. Picture Porky Pig raping Elmer Fudd. See, why do you think they call him Porky, huh? I know what you're gonna say, 'Elmer was askin for it.'"

...

"Do you think there's more rape at the equator or the north pole? Most people think it's the equator; I say it's the north pole. Most people think the equator because it's hot down there, women don't wear a lot of clothing, men can see women's tits, they get horny, and there's a lot of ****ing going on. That's exactly why there's LESS rape at the equator, because there's a lot of ****ing going on! Look at the population figures. Billions of people live near the equator - how many Eskimos we got, thirty, thirty-five? Nobody's gettin' laid at the north pole, it's too ****ing cold! Guys will say to their wives 'Hey, tonight honey, huh, huh?' 'Are you crazy, the windchill factor is 300 below!'"

...

"You know what the biggest problem an Eskimo rapist has? Trying to get wet leather leggings off a woman who's kicking. You ever try to get leather pants off someone who didn't wanna take 'em off? You would lose your hardon in the process!"

- M4H

Those are kind of funny.

I like Carlin, I get him. However, Carlin isn't doing satire up there.

We had a similar thing at my college when I was a freshmen, dont remember what, I think it had something to do with minorities or homosexuals or something. Everyone got bent out of shape ridiculously.

I think one of the best responses was something along the line of... "I dont know how you missed this in literature class but it is called satire... I mean its no "modest proposal" but god damn it people..."

Is it just me or is everyone extremely sensitive as of late... I mean all the damn super bowl commercial controversy and such... Everyone needs to chill.

Watch for next week's hilarious column on the Holocaust: "Being gassed to death is only bad if you aren't naked."

Someone mentioned George Carlin; with his act, or insult comics, you know they're joking. The sad fact is, a piece like this could and should be published, and be obviously seen as satirical, but there are people out there who think that rape is a minor problem, or that women actually enjoy it. If your stance isn't perfectly clear, you're going to get some pretty nasty accusations made against you.

Lisa Lampanelli will say bad things about Hispanics, Jewish people, blacks, old people, anyone. It's funny, because it's her act. If I'd go up to a Hispanic guy and quote something from one of her acts, like maybe asking how many purses he's stolen today, I really don't see any good coming out of it, because the context is just not right for it. He'd assume I'm just some racist idiot, not someone making satirical commentary on how it sucks that there's a stereotype that Hispanics have a penchant for theft.

That was a good line. Anyone who'd publish that in a newspaper and mean it could expect numerous death threats.

I tend to agree. Rape is just one of those topics that is kinda "iffy" even in the comedic sense. Even though you may get the humor and understand the context, it's one of those things that you don't want to laugh about or make light of.

You may laugh, but for me it's the uncomfortable laughter -- (think the audience at the night club when Kramer exploded)
