I was pulled over a few years ago. The officer asked for my registration. I told him it was in my glove box with my pistol and asked if he would like to secure it. He said something like "Why do I care where your gun is, mine is right here" patting his holster. I reached in, got out my registration and handed it to him.

If I wasn't white I probably would be dead.

I have no words. What pisses me off the most is that there are near zero repercussions to cops who act this way.

Now THIS one I have a feeling they'll do something, but that's just because it's so soon after another incident, so they want to make the public think that these things get dealt with.

Did you have earphone in both ears?

Yes, I did. I know, it's illegal... :$

I swear, I couldn't hear a fucking thing until I managed to shut that stupid ipod off. I stopped riding with it after that.

Thankfully, the cop didn't give me a ticket for the earphones. Just for speeding. I paid the fine and went to traffic school to keep the points off my license.

OK, so I found the video, and it's just the aftermath? This entire thread seems to be based on nothing but the girls story, or am I missing something?

You're not, and that's usually how these things start. You get one side of the story which pisses everyone off, then it doesn't matter what the other side says. In this case there looks like there's a big issue here, but I'm still waiting to hear what the hell else might have happened.

I agree, it certainly looks very suspicious, but that doesn't mean much to me.

being black will get you killed.

Its true.

I'm white. I carried for 7 years. Never had a problem with the cops. Of course, I dont drive like a psychopath either.
Was only pulled over once for speeding in 8 years. And it was only 40 in a 35.

Whereas if you were doing 80 in a school zone with gansta rap blasting thru the whole town at 2AM, I suspect the police may be a little less civil.

I'm gonna guess that as he reached for his wallet the girl shouted about him having a CCW license and the cop just freaked out. Like you said though, let's wait for his camera's feed to be posted so it can be better determined the actual timing of the events. I can't fathom him going for his gun though over a broken tail-light and no warrants on him for anything.

I believe the story, here is a similar video that was basically the same idea, black guy stopped and asked to get license, he goes to grab it... bang bang bang:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XFYTtgZAlE

When the guy goes in his car, he's grabbing his wallet because he was instructed to do so.

I don't know if that cop should be fired for shooting an unarmed non threatening man, or if he should be fired for ridiculously bad aim. I think he did end up being dismissed, but no criminal charges.

Tragic incident.

Doesn't seem like a wise idea to let an officer know you have a firearm on you as you're reaching into your pocket though, which is what the girl stated occurred.

He was charged and pleaded guilty. I don't think he's been sentenced yet, but he's facing a max of 20 years. I'm guessing he'll get 7 and be out in 4. The city settled with the guy for $285k.

I think he was just trying to play it safe, basically a "btw I have a gun, but don't think I'm going for it"

Seems like it was a responsible thing to do. Had he not said anything the cop would have shot anyway then stated that he went for his gun. Seems you can't win at all in that situation.

I believe her.

Castillo had no criminal record, was driving around with his girl and young daughter.

Michael Brown in contrast had robbed a store a half hour before...

Guessing he was anxious, and maybe blurted it out without really thinking about the timing in the situation. If you're going to say it, say it while the officer can see both of your hands.

Heck I get anxious of trigger happy cops when I get pulled over. Been like 7+ years, but still I would stick both hands out the window and leave them there until the officer reached my car and told me what to do. And I'm white.

Be safe in police habitat

It’s normal to be frightened when you encounter a cop. The reality is that most encounters with police rarely lead to aggressive behaviour and attacks are even rarer. Remember, most police prefer to avoid contact with humans, and any cop you do see is probably just as frightened as you are!

Remain as composed as possible and follow these simple guidelines whenever you are in police country. Soon you too will have more composure when sighting a cop because you will know what to do.

Avoid, avoid, avoid

The best way to prevent an unpleasant police encounter is to avoid them all together. Police usually avoid people, and most people don’t even know when they’ve come close to a cop.

To ensure a surprise or unpleasant encounter with a cop doesn’t occur, avoid moving through police habitat silently and alone. Travel in groups (the larger the better) and make lots of noise by talking or singing. And put the iPod away and pay attention to your surroundings.

Sometimes a cop that feels threatened will ‘act’ aggressively to defend against a perceived threat. This is often the case with a mother cop with cubs, a cop defending a food source, or a surprise encounter. The closer you are to the cop when it becomes aware of you, the more likely it is to react defensively: it may pop its jaws or swat the ground with its front paw while blowing and snorting, and/or it may lunge or “bluff charge” toward you in an attempt to get you to leave.

Occasionally, a cop will approach you in a non-defensive manner. It may just be curious. Perhaps it’s a young adult cop that is simply testing its dominance. Or it is food conditioned and/or habituated. Very rarely, it may see you as potential prey.

I'm thinking that too. He may have said "I have a gun!" and the cop took it as a threat.

I remember dealing with one asshole cop once and I was pretty nervous myself, and that's here in Canada, and north to boot, where things are very tame and easy going. Any bad cop stories here are always in the south, like Toronto. Asshole authoritative cops have a way of talking down to you that really messes with your state of mind. I imagine it's even worse for black people in the states knowing there is a very high chance of violent intervention.

I also watched the video this morning and without seeing the entire episode it's hard to say but the victim was wearing his seatbelt which indicates compliance and his gf was super calm considering the circumstance. Behavior such as the yelling cop on steroids is exactly why dash cams are quickly becoming the norm these days as they aren't just there to capture bad drivers.

Exercising 2nd amendment rights has never worked out for blacks, hispanics, or Native Americans. Indeed, most gun control laws of the 19th century into the 20th century were crafted to disarm only them.
