CD burner only burns RW discs

I have a Lite-On 16x10x40 CD-RW burner. Recently it has started to burn only CD-RW discs. It will not recognize new blank CD-R discs. I have tried several different brands of CD-R discs - no difference. My ASPI drivers are version 4.711. I have tried different burning software, I have flashed the firmware on the drive, and have tried varous physical IDE cable and controller locations. I don't know what else to do. If I can burn a CD-RW, then it can't be completely bad, but what would cause it to not recognize a blank CD-R disc? I am running a Duron 800, 256mb RAM, and Win2k SP4.

Odd... I have that EXACT same burner... leave it along for a while and stop burning so much. I remembered that if I started burning a lot of CDs, it would start coastering. Like it'd be burning and then outer rim of the cd has this "leak" thing and looks a like rip or something, but yeah the cd dies. I didn't try CD-RWs tho.

Is it possible for Win2k to somehow control this drive so that it behaves in this manner? Or is a hardware issue?
