CD Burner problems burning - Is it trashed?

I've been fooling around with this for over 14 hours....
I've been burning audio CD's using Windows ME, Nero, and Cendyne 16x10x40(TEAC CD-W516EB) for about 6 months with no problems. All the sudden I have a terrible static pattern on the audio CD's I burn. The noise gets louder and softer and seems to repeat itself throughout the CD. It sounds like I'm playing an old scratched up album on a cheap record player. I have not changed the media I'm writing to and do not know of any recent software that would cause the problem.

When I try to write a data disk, it appears to burn, but during verification I get the error Cannot mount the written CD. The CD cannot be read after that.

Here's what I've tried...

uninstalled all media players that may have been upgraded recently
renamed extensions of drivers that might be causing problem (list was on Nero's website)
upgraded Nero
Removed TEAC from devices and rebooted
defragged my hard drive
Tried copying from a CD instead of hard drive
Uninstalled all recent software
Restored Windows ME to a point before problem
Cleaned dust from PC interior (used compressed air around the burner)
Tried writing to CD-RW's and other CDR's
Installed NeroASPI from their website
Uninstalled Nero and reinstalled
Tried various combinations of burning properties

Nothing has helped or hurt. I'm out of time and ideas. I can't imagine what might have caused the problem to begin with so I think the CD burner is trashed.

TIA for any help.

Hmm recently I started having this same problem on my HP i8100 4x2x24. With everything you said. I thought it was trashed. Made Data disks fine (i never verified) but audio was all messed up. So I bought a new I/O Magic 16x10x40 and now the problem is gone. Happy ending right? Nope, just to see if I was right I poped in a audio CD I thought was bad, put it in my new cd-rw and it sounds perfect. It turned out to be a burner playing problem rather then burning. Have you tried listening to audio cd's on other things except your computer? If not try it, see how it sounds, and post back. Hope that helps.

The audio CD's sound just as bad on a CD player and the data CD's could not be read by my PC at work. I've only burned one other data CD, about 6 months ago, and I could read it at work with no problem.

Hmm I see... Well then IMO it's dyeing and try to get a return or RMA if you can. But only if you know you physicaly didn't break it. AKA poking it with a stick is just wrong lol Hope it works out for you.

didnt have the noise problem, but i had the problem where it wouldnt read right.. this was on a smart and friendly 4x4x24 cdrw. when using nero (which allows you to check a box to verify the data after writing), after the successful burn, it would go check the data and i'd get an unsuccessful verification.. but when i popped it into my dvd drive, it would work fine.

after along while of putting up with that, i got a Aopen 24x10x40 cdrw and has been smooth sailing ever since..
