CD/DVD-ROM Play/Skip button on front pannel

I'd like my PC to play Audio CDs headless, and know some drives have a Play/Skip button on the front pannel. If I boot my PC (Windows 2000) without any audio CD software launching (Windows Media Player, WinAmp, etc.) and hit that play button on the drive, will the CD start to play? If so, is the sound only limited to the front headphone jack, or will it play through my PC? I'd like to know how this works before I buy one of these drives. Thanks!

Now if I can just figure out how to send the control codes to the drive via a remote without bringing an application to the foreground. =)
