CD-ROM DEAD?

At first, for 2 days, the CD drive (d would have a red question mark beside it in My Computer. I would always get the "secondary drive not found 0" error. Today, the D: shows up fine in My Computer but when I put in a CD, the CD image next to the mouse cursor blinks repeatedly but nothing happens. The LED on the CD-ROM doesn't blink at all either.

I have checked the cables in the computer and they are all plugged in correctly.

I have had this CD-ROM for 5 years now - is it time to get a new one? It's a SAMSUNG RW 52X.

Probably time to replace it with a DVD-ROM drive or another CD-ROM drive.

okay....but what is "dead" in the CD-ROM? the laser lens?

You may have lost the BIOS in the Drive.

Pretty much the same behavior is what my old Pioneer Drive did when it died early this year.

what do you mean by "lost the BIOS"? can i get it back? how does it get lost all of a sudden?

There are lots of ways things like that can go bad bro. It could have gotten a corrupted from a power surge is just one possibility. I think what the other guys are getting at is that with a component as cheap as an optical drive, it really isn't worth the time and effort troubleshooting the component when you can just buy another for 25 bucks.

Just order up one of these and you will be good to go for another 3 years

Hey guys,

Thanks for your help. Amos, is that a good one? Do other people have any other recommendations? I've been out of the loop for a couple of years - I know that blu-ray writers are out now. Should I consider one of them?

I have no need for Blueray myself so I never considered it. I am sure you will get lots of opinions on what is the "best" optical drive I am happy with the LG's I linked I am using them in three systems they are quiet and quick enough for me most of all they have been reliable with everything I have thrown at them. There are two versions of the drive I linked to one with Lightscribe the other w/, as I remember only a couple bucks difference between them they are otherwise the same.
