cd rom install problem

Trying to install a cd rom pulling my hair out trying to get this thing to work. I tried plugging into the sound card won't work. Tried plugging into the secondary motherboard slot doesnt work. There is power because the tray will open.
Any help greatly appreciated

Can you give me more info? Is the CD-ROM recognized by DOS, slaved correctly, do you have the MSCDEX drivers correctly installed, is it recognized by windows?

Thanks for taking an interest in my problem.
I have th cd rom set as the master on my secondary ide jumper set to master. During start up I noticed the hd on the primary and the cd rom on the secondary ide. However, only the hd shows up when I go to my computer window. I'm using windows 98. I don't have any drivers. I do have the win98 cd. The last time this cd rom worked It was plugged into the sound card.

Did you check to see if PNP operating system is enabled in the bios? Did you try the add hardware and let 98 set it up? Had an older Cd rom that Win 98 would not recognize no matter what . Just did this after I reloaded 98. Wound up buying a new drive and all was fine. Are you running SE or 98. I had problems with 98 not setting up as well but SE took care of that.Good chance the add hardware will set it up.

Did you go into bios and set your secondary master to auto?

Went into bios and used the auto detect. The hd on the primary showed but nothing showed up on the secondary side. Didn't notice anything way to auto setup. Maybe that is my problem? However, when my computer boots up and on the screen I notice it says cd rom mode 4.Any ideas!

This is an old asus motherboard and I have never upgrade the bios.
This cd rom has worked on this mothboard before. When I try to install using add hardware it asks for the windows cd which of course I cant play for obvious reasons. I think this is a cicero cd rom player and i'm trying to find a driver as I type, not having any luck.

Try copying the Win95 cab files to the HD or install the DOS drivers (which you'll probably have to do to do the former)

Peculiar. Are you able to find the CD ROm through the hardware wizard search?

Also, are both IDE channels enabled in the BIOS and in windows system properties (under hard disk controllers)

Have you tried seting up the CD-Rom as a slave or doing an autodetect setting

Also, I am wondering whether the CD-ROm works when you use aboot disk. If it does, then the problem might be a letter assignment in the MSCDEX.
