CD-Rom Probs...

Have a Creative 5230E 52X CD-Rom. The problem is it decides to read cd's whenever it wants. If I insert a CD it may read it, and if it does upon ejecting it and putting it back it, it won't recongnize anything. This does this with Audio and Data cd's. Running both XP, and 98 with an Epox 8kta+ mobo. Updated the bios, got the new 4in1drivers for VIA chipset, and tried to update the driver or firmware for the drive but it doens't exsist. Creative has some Infra Suite proggy that supposedly has the driver in it but the device manager says its still a plain CD-Rom in 98. In XP it has the right drive but still nothing in terms of reading cd's. Ideas anyone???? Thanks in advance.

when you goto My Computer can you see(icon) the drive?

In XP right now and ya it shows the drive in XP, device manager says there isn't any conflicts with the device either just fyi

ok...next with WinXP you have to tell it what todo when you insert a CD... right click your Start right click the drive you after left click Properties ...there is a tab there Autoplay left click and start telling Windows what to do with the different file types

Does it not recognize the disc in the drive OR the drive altogether.

WHen You put in a disk My computer shows an icon for the disk. If you change disks by Pushing the eject button on the Drive does the icon change?

I have seen this problem before and it has to do with the buffer not resetting.

I don't know of a fix for that but I was able to work around it by ejecting through windows (Right click on the drive and select eject).

That worked until I got another drive to replace that one!

Thats the problem, it won't get to that point many times. When it actually recognizes a cd, it does what its supposed too. When I put a cd in 95% of the time it just spins and spins in the cdrom, while the light on the cdrom blinks like its trying then it eventually locks the computer up, ejects the disk itself or just quits all together no recognizing the disk at all. The problem isn't the computer recognizing the CD-Rom, execpt in 98 with just standard cdrom, but the cdrom won't read most all cd's. Fairly new CD-Rom too, say 4-5 months old maybe a bit more.

RMA time if it isn't working well under either OS.

Just sent an email to creative help center. My guess is RMA will be soon, just gotta run through the stupid stuff with them no it alls.

You may want to try cleaning the lens on that CDROM!

Changed the IDE cable and its gotten better. Maybe a bad cable, still taking awhile to load or recognize but havne't had a problem like it was. May give it a day or so to see how it goes.

Yeah, that's a good idea...it may heal itself.

I had a problem sometime back with a CDRW not burning good copies. Replaced old IDE with new and problem disappeared.

Seems to be working fine in XP now that i changed the IDE cable but '98 is still up to its old tricks. Anymore ideas??
