CD-ROM trouble after flashing Bios

I flashed an MSI K7T Pro 2-A mobo to Ver.3 to up the multiplier and all went well. For some reason the CD-R won't work. I had it connected as secondary master. After clearing the bios still no CDR. I tried unplugging the ribbon and reattaching it the CDR and after rebooting it was OK. Another reboot and it's gone again. THEN I tried connecting it to the HD as a slave and I get a HD failure while booting. So, connected to the HD, I get HD failure. Connected as secondary master I get nothing except when I disconnect ribbon and reattach and reboot, but lose it again after another boot.
Any ideas? I'm leaning toward the CDR, which is a Phillips 10x by the way. Keep in mind the CDR was fine until I flashed the bios. It can't be the ribbon because it still doesn't work as a slave on the other ribbon.

you did load setup defaults in the BIOS, right?

Is the secondary channel turned on?

Is any of the drives set up as cable select?

Sounds really weird. Is the BIOS recognizing the drive at all?

How about just attach the cdr with no hdd on the primary and see if the BIOS recongizes it.

Secondary channel is on.
No on the cable select.
Yes it is weird. I'll try another cable before I can the CDR.
However I'm stumped about the HD failure with the CDR as a slave.
