CD Roms- which to buy?

I just installed a game and now it won't read the CD to let me play the game, or any other CD's either. I see at Pricewatch I can get a 52X for about $25 or something. But I also understand there is a reason for that. Instead of just getting the cheapest thing out there, what should I look for in a CD Rom? I would consider a CD RW but I'm not really willing to lay down the $ for that right now. I don't have much occasion to use it. I just wanna play my games

well...ive heard good things about the asus 50x drive...its fast and good, although ive heard its a bit loud...whatever you do though...STAY AWAY FROM CREATIVE DRIVES...they have a tendency to die quickly

Asus 50x


Go with a DVD-rom, Toshiba 12X or 16X is good. They are cheap.

I have a Sony 52x CD-Rom(#5211) that is quiet and has given me no trouble. They sell for $25-30 + shipping.

I personally have an Acer 50X that is quiet and reads everything. Teac and Toshiba make very good drives.

Acer is a perfectly good name to go with, as is Asus.

You don't really need to worry about those faster speeds though.

I'd settle with a 24X CD-Rom drive anyday. I have NEVER noticed a diff. in quality or speed in anything higher than 24x (which is my burner speed, my other CD drive is 40X...both are Acer).

I've heard good things about Plextor. Stay away from Creative Labs. I had a 52x
die on me a year ago. I've got a Shuttle now. I don't really have any complaints.

Go Toshiba for DVD or CDROM and maybe plextor drives for scsi

TEAC and Acer both make great CD-ROMs, TEAC is a bit expensive, but definitely worth it. Acer is also fast and reliable. I also heard good things about Toshiba.

Ok I learned= stay away from Creative Labs, and I also learned a couple good brand names for CD drives (Teak, Acer, Toshiba) Thx guys

I've had 4 different acers and no problems to speak of. They read everything I put in, factory and home burnt and music.
