CD-RW Master or Slave?

Have just purchased an EIDE CD-RW. (Acer 8432 - please don't tell me "should've got a Plextor" - I'm sick of hearing it!) Instructions say place the CD on the secondary IDE cable as Master, and the CD-RW as the Slave.

However, I have read in a couple of magazines that the opposite should be done, to optimise writing performance...

Are both acceptable, what are the pro's and con's of the two different setups? Or maybee using the primary cable's slave? HD has to be primary master I guess...

in general put the device you will be using most, as master and the other as slave.

i would put the cd-rw as master on the secondary ide.
and use this as my main cd drive also.

have your hard drive as the master on the primary ide.

the cd-rom drive will be slave to one or the other depending on how you want to set it up. if you do lots of cdrom to cd-rw buring put the cd-rom slave to the hard drive.

otherwise leave the cd-rom slave to the cd-rw.

(devices on the same ide controller will be slower when reading to each other than on seperate controllers.)

Don't think it would matter. I agree with Cosmin, just put it on whatever controller will be used less. So... if you only have two controlls I would think hard drive as master on IDE1, cdrw as master (or slave... does it matter?) on IDE2 and your regular cd-rom as either master or slave on IDE2.

I'd put the writer on master and the cdrom as slave on the secondary IDE channel. Most Programs that require a CD in the drive default to the last drive letter in the system. Don't want to wear out the RW playing games, now do we?

BTW, I always burn a copy to the HD before burning a CD...

If I had to have a IDE CDRW drive, I would do it the Tominator says. SCSI rules!
