Im sure it's been asked a million times but here goes again.

Which do i get SCSI 16X burner
or IDE/ATA 32X burner

Price is pretty much the same. With IDE i'd have to get a ATA100 CARD for my system. If that affects anyone's opinion. I know a few years ago SCSI was worth the extra money, but now burnproof etc is ATA better for the speed increase?

thanks for all the help.

If you plan to use it (copy, burn, whatever) while performing other intensive tasks SCSI may work better, thanks to much lower CPU utilization and not interfering with your IDE read-writes. Otherwise, 32x IDE will perform much better.

The 32X IDE will burn faster than the 16X SCSI provided the media is good and you have no errors. I have had three SCSI burners, two Firewire, and now a USB 2.0. I have always avoided IDE burners because they are really not as reliable. Burn-proof came along and helped, but the CPU involvement and potential conflicts still happen. Most of the burner "X" ratings are somewhat hoeky anyway - they are not based on a constant rotational velocity, but rather at an optimum point. The rest of the actual performance is less than rated.

Looking ahead, I would probably look hard at a good USB 2.0 - about 24X, and not bother with SCSI. I have alwaqys had SCSI on all my systems until 1394 and USB 2 - then I got rid of SCSI which required a dedicated IRQ. I would keep looking at ALL options.
