"A suitable scsi controller for a CDROM is about 35 bux max. The extra cost for a CDROM or Burner is like, 50-100 bux. Having the added capabilites alone is worth that little money.
I have a CDRW, CDROM, ZIP, and 2 hard drives. Could I fit all that into IDE? no."
Yes you can have all those devices for less then $35 (let alone less then $35 + $50 to 100). You can get a ATA66/ATA100 controller for $35 or less.
I will agree that Parallel scanners are basically crap, however for home use and even light to medium business use USB Scanners perform just as well as SCSI.
I'm sorry we had you back up for statement however making such a broad sweeping statement as "Avoid anything IDE unless it's a hard drive. " either says:
1) This guy knows something and has very good reasons for saying this.
or
2) This is someone's personal preference.
In your case we fall to interpretation 2.
"And to ADD to my Rant... The question on the Topic was "CD/RW recommendations" (spelled correctly). I was making "my recommendation"... and I recommend avoiding IDE. "
No one is disputing that you were/weren't making a recommendation, but your recommendation was to spend $85-135 more without any reasoning.
