CD-writer issues, please help!!

I've got an external HP CD-writer (8200) and Windows XP Home ( i know, it's not mine), won't recognize it as a cd writer, just a cd player. How can I change this? The device manager says it is running the 8200a driver, but it is a 8200e device. I downloaded the latest driver from HP, but it won't let me install it, it just goes through its automatic installation. How can I force it to install the driver I want, not the driver it wants?

Any ideas?

Did you follow HP's driver installation instrucitons? Did you try referring the drive to the folder where the files were extracted to? Also, what burning software are you trying to use? You could just download the nero demo and see if that works properly.

I did, but as soon as I plug in the cd-writer, XP's automatic driver installation occurs. I tried tricking it by forcing an installation of a generic cd, then updating to the folder from HP. It doesn't seem to work.

SOme more info:

1) The device manager has it listed as "HP CD-Writer+ 8200a", but it is an "8200e" series device. DOes this matter?

2) The device works for playing cd's, but is not recognized as being a recordable drive.

3) FOr recording, i've tried Nero, Direct CD, and XP's burning. None of them will recognize the cd-burning capabilities of the device.

You should uninstall the device, then any software you put on there. Then run the install shield wizard, then reboot and connect the device. Like many usb devices, you should install the software before attaching the device.

Removing Previously Installed Drivers

Search for the following files and delete if found: HPUATA.INF, HPUATA.SYS, HPIOSATA.INF, HPIOSATA.PDR, EUIOSMSD.PDR, EUIOSMSD.INF, EUSBMSD.SYS.
Shut down and turn off the computer.
Restart the computer.
The new hardware wizard should start once the computer is restarted.
***The appropriate files will be restored during the USB CD-Writer driver installation.***

Will removing any of those mess with my internal CD-RW? I don't want to stop that from working just to get the backup burner working.

HA! Oh, well. The internal seems to be working now, so I think i'll tell my boss to hope for the best and pray that he won't need the external.
