CDROM and CDRW problems!!!!!!

I have identicle pc's at home and at work. I am using the ASUS P3V4X motherboard w/ PIII 600E. On both of my computers I have trouble reading or sometimes even recognizing a cd, in either the cdrom or the cdrw. I have a plextor burner at home and a yamaha burner at work so I dont think it is the burner doing this. I can click on the drive and it opens but doesnt show me the contents of the cd. This happens in either drive. Sometimes if I open and close the cd tray several times it will finally recognize the cd. Anyone know what might be causing this problem. Also on my work pc, when I go to record a cd....I open adaptec easy cd creator 4 and my pc reboots. It didnt use to reboot untill I hit the record button. I have reinstalled adaptec several times. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am also using different media to burn with. So I dont think it is the media.

Have you cleaned your drives lately? I had a CD-R that was doing something similar, I had never cleaned it in the 3 years that I owned it. I started cleaning it, and the problem hasn't returned. My first recomendation is to change your burning software to something other than adaptec, I recommend Nero, I have always had problems with Adaptec. If you are determined to stick with Adaptec, you could try some of the following for your reboot problem: First if it has been 2 years since you reformated you hard drive, it could be due. I am always amazed how many little "buggy" problems get solved after that. Second it could be a hardware problem, try to swap the drive that you use at work with the burner from home and see what happens when you run adaptec. If you still have problems with the reboot, try swaping your cable. If the problem still persists, you may have some dead capacitors on your motherboard. I'm no expert, this is just what I would try.

Have you installed the latest updates from Adaptec/Roxio?
Do you have the latest ASPI layer installed? If that motherboard is based on a Via chipset, you might want to install the latest 4-in-1 drivers.

Although I haven't had any problems with Easy CD Creator, you might want to go to Ahead Software and download Nero and try that.

I cleaned my drives last night. Still have the same problem. I have the latest updated drivers and firmware for the roms. I will go get the newest 4 in 1 drivers from asus. If that doesnt work I will change cables. I am downloading Nero right now, thanks for the link and the help!
