CDROM can't work under Win2000

My CD-ROM worked fine before under Win2000. But I don't know why it doesn't work anymore now.

I have Win98 and Win2000,under Win 98, the CD-ROM works fine, but under Win2000, I can't find the CD-ROM. When I check the "device manager", it shows that "Your registry might be corrupted (code 19)"

I changed several CD-ROMs to test it, get the same error. Since
the CD-ROM works fine under Win98, it must not be the problem of
CD-ROM itself.

Then what should I do with the "corrupted registry"?
Thanks!

I don't know about the corrupt registry but you may need ASPI drivers for W2K to enable your cdrom. If you look around the net you may find aspi32.exe for W2K. Install it and you might find your CD may work.

Have you tried running the REGCLEAN utility by Microsoft ... or (shudder) one of the Norton registry cleaner-uppers? Norton 2001 Systemworks Professional seems to clean thinks up pretty well on my system.

Just a thought

Hi!

I know you said CD-ROM, but I just spent the last two days recovering from a similar situation with my CD-RW drive. Is your CD-ROM drive a burner by any chance? If so, do you run Adaptec DirectCD and Windows Media Player 7?

If so, I'm willing to bet that's the problem. There is a conflict with Windows 2000, DirectCD and the Adaptec CD recording plug-in that Microsoft loads with Media Player 7. As for why it worked before and now it doesn't - Media Player 7 updates itself monthly. It probably installed the CD recording plug-in that was apparently added AFTER you first installed Media Player.

For more information on how to fix the problem, read this article. I'll warn you though, this fix did NOT work for me and I ended up reformatting and playing around with my burner drivers and Media Player 7 just to get the two to coexist peacefully. I can't burn MP3's to CD from Media Player 7, but my burner works perfectly with the software that came with it.

Incidentally, there seems to be a similar problem with Real Jukebox. I went out to their website yesterday and read that they pulled the Adaptec CD burning plug-in and are working with Adaptec to resolve the problem.

Hope this helps...

Is your drive SCSI?

Here is one that I ran into. For older drives i.e. non-ultra aware you may have to set the SCSI BIOS data rate to the appropriate ID to 10 MB/sec. I have a 32X Tosh and a 4x4x16 Yamaha. When I would boot NT or 2K the Tosh would be recognized OK but all I could get off it was garbage. The Yamaha was fine. Both drives worked fine in 98. When I set the Tosh to 10 MB/sec from 20 MB/sec, all was well. BTW this can work in the other direction as well. A SCSI zip was not recognzed at 10 MB/sec in 2K but was fine at 20 MB/sec. As if it's not hard enough...

Thank you for so many kind helps! But until now it doesn't work.

1. I do not have SCSI driver.
2. I had a SONY CDRW before together with my Acer 40X CDROM. But I did not
install DirectCD.Only install "SONY CD Extreme". But now I have removed
the CDRW and there is only a CDROM there.(I also deleted the "SONY CD
Extreme"--the software that I used to burn CD)
3. I do have Window Media Player 7.0
4. I ran REGCLEAN, but the problem is the same.
5. I downloaded the aspi32.exe, but I can't install it, it tells me that
"No qualified Adaptec products have been detected on this system". What
does it mean? I think I do not have Adaptec product in my machine...But
according to Garion2k, the Adaptec DirectCD is plug-in Media Player 7.0

(PS: the CDROM works under Win98, also I can play Music under Win2k.)
Thank all your help... But I still could not figure how to do..

If you want to install the ASPI drivers from Adaptec, you will need to install the EasyCD Creater or the Adaptec program you got with your CD burner. Once the program is installed, you then can install the ASPI drivers.

Acura - it's odd that you are able to play music CDs in Windows 2000, yet the system can't find the CD-ROM. Does the drive letter show up in Explorer or My Computer?

As for the ASPI layers, Shadow07 is right - you first need to install an Adaptec product such as Easy CD Creator to load the ASPI drivers. My hunch is that it won't do you any good, since you no longer have a burner in your system and the ASPI layer is for burners.

Have you tried removing the CD-ROM drive from Device Manager and then rebooting? Sometimes this will force Windows to redetect the drive and reinstall drivers to a working state.

Best of luck!

There is a registry patch somewhere to fool the system into thinking you have an Adaptec controller/software. You might try fooling the system by adding some hardware to W2K with Ctrl Panel even though you don't have the hardware. All you need is some Adaptec registry entry to fool the aspi32.exe program into installing the drivers. Or simply get the drivers and copy them into the system/system32 directory. There are four files wnaspi32.dll, winaspi.dll, aspi32.sys and wowpost.exe. If you get these files just copy them into the appropriate directories.

Thanks for so many kind advices and helps. But I could not fix
it using all methods mentioned above. Finally I reinstall my
win2000. and tried to figure out the problem.

The reason is that I update my media player to 7.0! I am using
a SONY CRX140 CDRW, and install the "Extreme CD" comes with the
CDRW, together with WMP 7.0 under win2k. Same problem happened.
and it can't be fixed by using the method by the methods mentioned
above-- only reinstall win2000.

So be careful when upgrade your WMP 7.0!
