Celeron 633 fast enough for Divx playback?

I'm trying to build an HTPC out of some stuff I've got lying around and I've run into some problems. The extra AMD mobo I've got only takes the newer AGP8x cards, and the only cards I have with TV-out are older ones (Voodoo3 and such). Now I don't need anything special (this machine will be a dedicated media player), so I don't want to get another card. I do however have an extra Celeron 633 + mobo that will take the older cards. With a completely stripped down version of WinXP (and with 192mb of ram), could this system reliably play back Divx (and Xvid) files?

Probably not all the time -- people here have had problems with 600 - 700 MHz P3's which are much faster than 66fsb celerons. 800 - 900 MHz seems to be the consensus for reliable divx / xvid at higher resolutions.

If your motherboard and memory can handle 100 or 133 fsb you might pick up a faster P3, or sell these parts and get one of those Outpost.com sempron bundles.

Just about, although some high bitrate xvid/divx/3ivx etc will struggle. Reliable yes given the system's in a good state, smoothly is another question.

I'd say no. I had a P3 733 which would play most Divx etc fine, but if you went into high bitrate encodes it wasn't watchable. Since dropping a 1ghz in there, it's been sweet for playback and I currently use it for HTPC stuff.
