Celeron D420 1.6 ghz 800fsb 512kb cache (ouch! or does it matter?)

thought it might be a good option for overclocking at least until the july price drops when it will be cheap to get a q6600

anybody have one yet? whats the overclocking like?
or would it be a better option to get a e2140 instead

im thinking of pairing this up with a asus p5k (normal) -- this board still hits 500fsb or so right? (not that I'll hit it lol)

Yes, the Celeron D 4xx series is indeed based off of Core 2. One way you can tell is the clockspeed. Celeron D 3xx's were never that low.

Wiki:

These are single Core processors built on the Intel Core microarchitecture, hence are clocked much lower than the Cedar Mill Celeron's, but still outperform them. These make up the Celeron D 400 series. The FSB has been increased to 800 MHz from 533 MHz and the TDP has decreased from 65W to 35W. These will be priced very aggressively at $39 for the Celeron D 420 (1.6 GHz), $49 for the Celeron D 430 (1.8 GHz), and $59 for the Celeron D 440 (2.0 GHz). As is traditional with Celerons, these will lack SpeedStep and Virtualization Technology.

Not a bad choice, especially if you don't need dual core now and are planning on upgrading to quad soon anyway, but if you're planning on keeping it around awhile i would just invest the extra in the pentium e2140.

Are there no reviews available yet? googled it and nothing showed up. I probably wouldn't sell this cpu after upgrading but rather move it to another pc at home so if the overclocking of these truly suck, I'd rather not.

however the price is incredible - d420 1.6ghz is only $60AU vs $112au for the e2140.

im upgrading from a athlon 64 3000+ ; the DT article compares d440 cpu to a 3500+ so I wont be seeing much improvement at stock speeds if any 2.0ghz d440 = 3500 // 1.6ghz = 3000+?
I would be hoping to hit at least 2.5 if not 3ghz to make it a respectable system

Hmmm, that would be nice for a cheap and thrifty server type device that doesn't need an uber multi-core, but just needs to work and barely sip electricity.
