Celeron G3900 vs QX6700?

So, I have an old XPS720 with a QX6700, and which at the time I maxed out the RAM to 8gb and two gtx260's and at the time cost me a lot of money, anyways though if I build a new pc with the Celeron G3900, will I see any difference in performance related to emulation? This is my first time building a computer, because the XPS 720 was built for me, I already ordered the G3900 since I'm on a very tight budget right now, there was nothing else I could buy not even the Pentium G4400.

Strictly for emulation it would be faster since emulators rely on high single thread performance which is where the Celeron will have the major advantage.

Ivy Bridge--we had Haswell and Broadwell IPC bumps before skylake--vs the slower clocked Q6600, but you get the idea. Two cores now is about as fast as four cores then.

As mentioned before, a lot of emulators don't scale cores all that much, so you want the fastest single core performance you can. For emulators, your performance will likely double with a Skylake Celeron

Well, it's not just core speed that you need to be concerned about. Cache plays a role too.

You probably should have saved up and purchased a G4400 Pentium, for $10-20 more. It has 3MB L3 cache, instead of 2MB, and 3.3Ghz instead of 2.8Ghz. Quite a difference, if you're not planning to overclock.

Edit: Regardless, either has faster single-core/thread speeds than a QX6700 does.

Understandable, 10$ could have easily been saved in my budget now that I go through all of my bills. I'm kind of regretting the g3900 purchase although I could overclock it, which will have to suffice for now. I'm very impatient about getting things, so probably wasn't a smart buy. Will the g3900 overclock at decent rate and will it be able to handle ps2 emulation? I'm using an H110M board, a rather cheap build that I'm building indeed.

On the contrary, I don't believe my board can overclock.

Yeah, you need one of the handful of Z170 boards that will OC a locked SKL CPU, or one of the ASRock B150 or H170 "Hyper" boards.

I just built a rig a few days ago with a G3900 and OCed it to 4.34Ghz, in an ASRock B150 K4/Hyper ATX board.

Edit: The CPU was under $43 shipped on ebay, but the board... was like $115 shipped. Pretty pricey for a lower-end board.
