celeron vs Athlon vs Pentium

I am after buying either a celeron 1.7, an athlon 1.7 or a Pentium 4 1.7

now I am leaning towards the Athlon over the celeron, but I am wondering whether or not the extra money is worth speanding on the P4 over the Athlon. The athlon is a lot cheaper and very good so any help would be great.

Plus I am wondering what make of mobo is best for any or all of the CPU's? any help would be brilliant.

i would recommand both amd and intel pentium, but if you want to save a more $$, go w/ the amd.
but at this point, i would suggest you wait for another month when the KT400 motherboard comes out.... that would really kick ass for the amd.

I assume you're talking about the Athlong XP 1700+ when you say "athlon 1.7"?
Anyway, I'd recommend the 1700+ over the P4 1.7GHz, and the P4 1.7GHz over the Celeron 1.7GHz.

I think even the p4 - 1.6a Northwood is faster than a p4-1.7 Willamette at stock speeds.

What you could do is buy a Mac G4 that.........um.....err........run circles around the x86 that you have mentioned.


















Just kidding, it is a no brainner that you should go with the Athlon, unless you have money for the P4 2.4-2.5ghz.

Whatever you do, never get a celeron.... who would want reduced cache!!!!?!?!?!

If you are not planning to overclock, I think Athlonxp1700 is the best bet. If you are thinking about overclocking, then you can give the P4 1.6a a thought. And KT266a's are a very good and stable chipset. KT333 are good too but there are still some issues with memory and stability. Probably that will get fixed with bios upgrades.

About future upgradability....I dont think AMD is going to release too many more cpus that are faster at the socket A level. Just my opinion.
