Just picked up a brand new BH6 rev 1.01 and a Celermine II 600. Since the board is new and doesn't have the latest BIOS updated with support for the Celermine II, would I be at risk of frying the cpu? Or would the BH6 default to the CIIs 1.5v?

Anything below revision 1.2 is not capable of supporting the Coppermine/Celeron2.

Still no one has answered my question

Is it safe to run the CPU with the shipping BIOS (ie. will the voltage go low enough) and then flash it to the latest?

Well, I think you're better off flashing it before putting on, 2.0v can quickly fry any Celeron2 today.

If you have no other CPU, and you are not sure about the Bios, make sure that you have a Slotket that can Adjust the core voltage. (like the MS 6905 v2 ). A good Slotket cost only $3-5 more than generic.

BH6 1.05 BIOS JJ,dated 1/99 I think, took my c566 at 1.6
Still using the old JJ BIOS with the MSI 6905 ver2
and GOrb. Voltage has always been controlled by MB, MSI
at default. Rock solid at 800 which the BH6 detects it as.
(Reads PIII 800 at post). Use the
Geo.

Rev. 1.0X BH6's definately support celery II's, running 2 633's at 950. I flashed to SS first, but it'd be interesting to see what would happen... I doubt 2 volts would fry your CPU right away, but why exactly would you take the chance?

LXi - ALL BH6's, regardless of revisions, do support Coppermine Celery's and P3's (that run @ 100 FSB though). They need to get a BIOS revision that allows the board to support lower voltages from 1.60 and up

Here's the official stance from Abit:

<< Do the BH6 Rev. 1.00, 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, etc. and up (BUT NOT 1.1 and above) boards and the BX6 Rev 1.00, 1.01, 1.02, etc. (BUT NOT BX6 Rev 2.0) boards support Coppermine CPUs?

No, the BH6 Rev. 1.00, 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, etc. and up (BUT NOT 1.1 and above) boards and the BX6 Rev 1.00, 1.01, 1.02, etc. (BUT NOT BX6 Rev 2.0) do not support Coppermine CPUs due to the native design of power for the CPU core voltage probably not being sufficient. So to avoid instability, we advise that the afore mentioned boards do not support Coppermine CPUs.
>>

The P3 FC-PGA and Celeron II FC-PGA are BOTH coppermine CPU's. Now as for Abit's stance its really a weighted chance that it will work. Abit say's not to use it to avoid instability issues. By officially saying the boards do not support the cpu they take themselves off the hook for supporting Coppermine CPU's on these boards. It is likely though that they will work since there have been a lot of people claiming success.

Since I have heard alot of people claiming success I will soon (i.e. within the next month) be attempting the P3/Celeron II usage on a BH6 1.01.

BH6 1.01 flashed with the latest bios, Iwill Slocket 2, Cel2 533 @ 800MHz (1.85volt - this is the third cel2 I overclocked and it was kinda stubborn, the first two were able to boot into win98 @ 1.50v and needed 1.65 volts to be completely stable, this one would only boot into win98 @ 1.75 volts and needs 1.85 volts to be stable). One strange thing is that if you change the core voltage on the slocket using jumpers, the motherboard will recognize the new voltage as "default" only after CMOS reset.

IMHO, it's a good idea to flash your BH6 with the latest bios just to get the 2/3 AGP divider.

I've been running an Abit BH6 1.0 since it first came out, paired it with a 566 C2 as soon as those came out and have been running it absolutely rock solid @ 953 (112x8.5) every since!

They work REALLY good with C2's!!!! As a matter of fact, I got a couple of Abit BX-133's that couldn't get the C2 as high as that old BH6 could. That MB is the best computer purchase I have ever made.

This discussion is getting a little silly; Abit has released a BIOS update, SS, that specifically supports Celeron II's. What the BH6 Rev 1.0X does not officially support is the PIII. But there are probably thousands of people running them anyway.
