cell phone dilemma

Ok, I'm interning out in cali this summer and will be back there fulltime in december. I'm looking to get SprintPCS with the Sanyo4500. There's a bunch of deals flying around and the amazon one ($50 off 100+) seems like the best one (I don't want GCs). My dilemma is that the amazon deal ends in April and I will be here in Ohio in April and in cali in May.
Is it easy and cheap to change phone numbers? Should I get a phone now or later?

I don't think it is too difficult to get the phone number changed, I've had to do it once and it wasn't a problem. Also, some plans offer the same rate no matter where you are calling to within the country, if not too cost-prohibitve that might be the way to go.

Well, I've got SprintPCS with a nationwide plan; no extra charge for long distance. They reserve the right to change your home base if in three (consecutive?) months you make a mjority of calls from a different area. So far, it's been $29.99/mo + tax.

BTW, I'm switching. Sprint's coverage is terrible and their service nonexistent.

My GF had hers changed with AT&T and it was free. One problem was that the place she bought it from charged her $125 because they thought she had broken her one-year contract since the original number was deactivated. It took some hoop-jumping to get it back.
