Learn to not get caught, nerd. I had a habit of ~1500 a month or so in high school and never got my phone taken away.

That said, if my teachers had tried to take my phone away I probably would have just taken the day off

Oh noes, the humanities.... If there's an emergency, they could always (old fogey voice) do what we did back in 'ol '96... Call the school office and have them page you.

Yep, it's possible to get ahold of someone in an emergency without a cell phone when you know where they are.

Yes humanities will stop existing if students don't have cell phone. What is there is shooting in school, how is student supposed to call 911?

What the hell is calling 911 going to result in? A clean-up crew, that's what.

You are a junior in high school in Washington state. What the fuck are you doing giving up your cell phone to the teacher? When I was your age I was caught for the first time, after years of violations, for leaving campus during lunch. I was threatened with a detention. I got away with alot during high school and this was the first time I was faced with actual consequences. Couldn't deal with the stupidity of it all. I left campus that day, got in my car and headed to the local community college and enrolled in running start. Cut 5 hours out of my daily school commitment and gave me two free years of college. I suggest you do the same.

I remember using my cell senior year to call MIT admissions office and the principal shook her finger at me and I hung up in shock. I explained to her the nature of the call and she told me to move to the parking lot to call and I was like uhhh ok. Shrug.

The question I ask all high school students is: your friends are ALL AROUND YOU. They are in your class or in class too. Why do people even TURN ON PHONES in high school? I turned mine off when I went to sleep up until I got out of class at 3pm. Maybe at lunch if we wanted to meet up for lunch (we had open campus at lunch, so we could leave).

College is different. We all have different class schedules or sometimes classmates (like my roommate) would ditch class, so it's fine to keep your phone on. Texting is fine as is sleeping, unlike in HS. The only time I got yelled at for texting (I was checking e-mail actually) was when we had a sub professor (reg professor was on maternity leave) and he was the most boring person ever. This sub was so bad everyone stopped going to class and he sent a nasty scathing email to the class yelling at us. Now I went to class, but I had to stay awake by playing with my phone. I never read this email so the next day almost everyone showed up again and here I was checking my email and he gave me a warning. I was like wow ok time to pay attention.

I'd be willing to bet that the per-byte cost to the consumer of a text message is at least an order of magnitude higher than that for a voice call.

Slashdot: SMS 4x More Expensive Than Data From Hubble
Well sure, I know that already.

What about the bitrate of a cellphone call though?

It pisses me off too that sending text messages through Skype is about 11 cents. Sending Instant Messages over any other service costs nothing besides the monthly ISP fee. Skype probably enjoys the same profit garnishing that cellphone companies do.

An even better idea: don't use your phone in class.
Stop with your reasonable ideas and let the poor little addict enjoy his crack habit.

And stop pissing away money on texts. It's pathetic how much money they cost, and just as much so that people are willing to pay high rates for strings of trite little messages.

IF you pay for texts (free on my plan), they cost 4 times as much per byte as it costs to get data from the Hubble Space Telescope. But who pays for texts? That's dumb, unless you send like 3 a month.

But seriously, OP, stop using your phone in class.

And, as a person under the age of 18, you have almost no rights, and a very small right to privacy compared to adults. Your only hope is to have your parents come in and complain. Your voice means nothing, and carries no legal wait.

I'm not saying this to be a douche, I hated that powerless feeling too.

Maybe the moron should read the last part of this post. If they want to take it and give it back to you at the end of the year they could do that if the put it in the student handbook. I just dont understand why you even need a phone while in HS. Like was said above your friends are all around. Do you really need to have a phone durring class?

If i was a teacher i would sit down the first day of class, set the 1 pound sledge on the desk and say this. "If i see you on a phone durring class your phone is going to meet my hammer". To me, talking on the phone like that durring school is one of the most disrespectful things that a student could do. My advice to the OP, grow up...

I can't speak for GSM/TDMA, but in CDMA it varies. They found that conversations are roughly 50% talking and 50% listening. Originally they had 8k and 13k voice coders (vocoders for short), but in order to increase bandwidth without increasing spectrum space EVRC was created. Basically, you ramp bitrates based upon whether you are talking or you are idle, or network congestion.

However the thing to remember is that the infrastructure for each text and voice are different. On the air interface, sure things are the same, a traffic channel is assigned and the backhaul points are the same. But once the type (voice/text) hits the switch, it becomes a different matter. Text messages are routed to a SMSC, whereas voice calls are routed to a vocoder.

However, I think it really boils down to demand. Text messaging has always experienced large positive growth over the years since it first came about.

if you value your privacy, dont put yourself in a position to lose it, which is what youre doing when you use your phone in class and its not allowed.

take your phone out in class, and you lose it (and its constituent parts) until they say you can have it back. its not hard to understand, it shouldnt have to be written 5 times longer than it already is to make it clear what is and isnt appropriate and what will happen if you ignore the usage policy.

Just lock the stupid cell, problem solved. Even better solution, don't use it during class.

Are you sure school could refuse to give phone back to parent if he/she demanded it back? After all it's parent property and i am sure parent could raise hell if school told him/her No.
