You can't have the phones at all? Even on vibrate? What if there's an emergency?

Oh noes, the humanities.... If there's an emergency, they could always (old fogey voice) do what we did back in 'ol '96... Call the school office and have them page you.
Yep, it's possible to get ahold of someone in an emergency without a cell phone when you know where they are.

Yes humanities will stop existing if students don't have cell phone. What is there is shooting in school, how is student supposed to call 911?

Does anyone know the bitrate of an cellphone voice call?
I'd be willing to bet that the per-byte cost to the consumer of a text message is at least an order of magnitude higher than that for a voice call.

You are a junior in high school in Washington state. What the fuck are you doing giving up your cell phone to the teacher? When I was your age I was caught for the first time, after years of violations, for leaving campus during lunch. I was threatened with a detention. I got away with alot during high school and this was the first time I was faced with actual consequences. Couldn't deal with the stupidity of it all. I left campus that day, got in my car and headed to the local community college and enrolled in running start. Cut 5 hours out of my daily school commitment and gave me two free years of college. I suggest you do the same.

Why not just enable the security lock feature?
An even better idea: don't use your phone in class.
And stop pissing away money on texts. It's pathetic how much money they cost, and just as much so that people are willing to pay high rates for strings of trite little messages.

IF you pay for texts (free on my plan), they cost 4 times as much per byte as it costs to get data from the Hubble Space Telescope. But who pays for texts? That's dumb, unless you send like 3 a month.
But seriously, OP, stop using your phone in class.
And, as a person under the age of 18, you have almost no rights, and a very small right to privacy compared to adults. Your only hope is to have your parents come in and complain. Your voice means nothing, and carries no legal wait.
I'm not saying this to be a douche, I hated that powerless feeling too.

Maybe the moron should read the last part of this post. If they want to take it and give it back to you at the end of the year they could do that if the put it in the student handbook. I just dont understand why you even need a phone while in HS. Like was said above your friends are all around. Do you really need to have a phone durring class?
If i was a teacher i would sit down the first day of class, set the 1 pound sledge on the desk and say this. "If i see you on a phone durring class your phone is going to meet my hammer". To me, talking on the phone like that durring school is one of the most disrespectful things that a student could do. My advice to the OP, grow up...
