But, I do want a flagship phone, because I'm an idiot/consumer sheep.

Was thinking Fi / Republic / Ting.... But with RW can't get anything better than Moto X 2nd Gen right now... Hmm.

Liking the LG V10, Neuxus 6P, Moto X Pure... so leaves Fi, Ting, and ???

Low monthly cost matters a lot...

Fi uses T-mobile and Sprint and you can get a nexus 6p on it i think so that's a selling point. Ting's customer service is fantastic.

Depending on how much data you see yourself using, Fi seems like the best bet. I believe Republic does the data refund thing too, but Fi using T-Mobile and Sprint (and wifi) is what puts it over the top for me.

Another option: Get on a 5 person family plan on Cricket, it's $20 a month ($22 a month starting in march 2016) for 2.5 gigs of data/unlimited text and voice... uses AT&T's towers, so excellent signal for a lot of people. Customer service is bad though.

On Fi and love it. The wifi coverage calling is so much better than T-Mobile.

My bill is around $23 for unlimited text and calling + $10 for the data. I only used 300 meg last month so they credited me back $7 of that the next month. It's about $26 a month for me with my data use.

Service has been excellent and the reliability of wifi calls/messaging working is far ahead of T-Mobile that the loss of cheap data was worth it. Plus with Fi you can switch to Hangouts and send all of your texts and calls through your desktop.

FWIW, I financed my 32 gig Nexus 5x (2 years, 0% interest) through the Fi store and my bill this month is $45.76 for the phone and and plan.

Not terrible. The phone is around $18 of that bill.

A lot of people have free Wifi coverage with their cable company too so this could work real well.

if you want int'l roaming to be covered as well, Fi is the way to go. You kinda need a 5X/6P/6 to use the full Project Fi features (Sprintfallback, VPN, wifi calling etc)

GSM Ting for truly low/zero usage ($6 per device plus usage rates)

Where did you see the price increase notice for Cricket?

It's somewhere on there on their website in fine print.

Ah, thanks. I found a reference to them changing the 5th line discount from -$40 to -$30 in March 2016 so it's not an across the board increase, just for a 5-line plan.

Google Fi was my personal choice for cheap cell phone service with low data use. I managed to cut my bill in half compared to what I was paying Verizon. Really happy with the service so far.

Just curious, why the 5x over the 6P?

So, you feel Fi is better than Ting because...?

Appreciate your feedback, folks...

Guess if I really wanted the LG V10, then I'd have to go with Ting.

If Fi, then the Nexus 6P or 5X, correct?

My plan is RingPlus VIP Pepper

Yes it really is free. The asterisk means you have to maintain a $5 minimum balance. But if you dont go over you dont eat into the $5. MMS costs 4 cents so that is really the only way you could conceivably eat into your $5 balance.

Just curious, why the 5x over the 6P?

Mostly size and weight, with a preference towards plastic vs. metal. I'm active, run a lot, on the go a lot and hate cases. The weight, durability of the plastic body and more pocketable size of the 5X was what I wanted. It's easier to grip, doesn't slide as much when propped at an angle, not cold to the touch, and just a functional device I don't feel bad about tossing on a counter or wherever.

Good points.... last year I briefly had a Nexus 6.... Dang, that thing was NOT easy to carry around.... did not fit in some shirt nor pant pockets.... But, I still might get the 6P... sheesh....

What solidified my decision was that the 6P was out of stock at the time I was buying my 5X. I bought during announcement week. So even if I had analysis paralysis on the purchase of 5x vs 6p the lack of 6P availability made the choice easier.
