Finally my first post here ...

I walked in today in my local Office Max (Chicago, IL). They are advertising 8x cendyne drives for 19.99, but the actual drives on the table were 16x. Even the sign said 16x - 19.99 with no rebates. The drive scanned at 71 dollars, but after pointing out the sign with the items cashier adjusted the price accordingly.

Hope other OM stores have same deal for you guys to jump on.

good luck.

Vancouver/Portland Hot Deal Junkies:

Vancouver Plaza - Plenty in stock, but they are not on sale there.

Cascade Market Plaza Place - Ditto.

- Must be a regional thing, or a clearance - YMMV - A scan from anyone would be great! I'll even host it if you can email it to me.

I went to the Office Max in Skokie, IL on Tuohy Ave. They had the Burner advertised, but they were out of stock.

URmatrix, Which store did you go to?

16x at North KC store (Barry and I-29) were $71, but I picked up 2 of the 8x @ $19.99, 1 was Samsung (Adaptec software), 1 Teac (NTI software). Left a couple there.......

I got a 16x10x40 drive at Office Max for $19.99 today as well. It wasn't a CenDyne though, it's a Hi-Val. I'm in San Francisco.

All 16x, 12x, and 8x CD burners (Cendyne, Hi-Val, I/O Magic) on sale for $20 because they are clearancing them out. Most stores will only some or none left.

The Kirkland, WA only has the Cendyne 8x8x24 left.

i bought the cendyne 8x8x32 to think about, may go for the 32x tdk @ cusa instead. on my receipt, it says **buy 1, get items for $40.01 off** what does everyone else's say? tia
and yep, there are four drives (four skus) for sale in the ad. but i don't know if those 8x/12x hps are in the deal...

I just purchased the last (2) CenDyne 8x8x32 drives from the Chanhassen, MN store for 19.99 each. They did have (4) more of the 16x10x40 for $71 each, no signs stating $19.99 each. But since it had sold the last of the 8x8x32, maybe they'll drop the price of the 16x10x40 for $19.99 just to get rid of them.

"maybe they'll drop the price of the 16x10x40 for $19.99 just to get rid of them."
doubt that. om isn't that logical. if they do, they will buy them on friday, or whenever they get paid
in the ad that was printed, there are FOUR skus... those FOUR skus are the ones that will be $19.99 while they exist
i am tempted to open my 8x so i can confirm exactly how hot i suspect this deal is
but i'm going to cusa first to see if i can find some of those $29.99 tdks
i don't ebay, what is no reserve

I got a 8x8x32 Cendyne for $19.99 at the OM in Matteson, IL. The cashier had to ask someone to go in back to look for it, and I forgot to ask how many they have left.

It's a rebadged Teac CD-W58E and came with a copy of NTI. No firmware updates available.

Could you post a link to a scan of the receipt? This drive is on clearance at my local Office Max, but for $61.

I will try the SKU there tomorrow.

I'm curious, why would someone buy a 8x CD-RW drive (with no burnproof and takes 25 mins to burn a CD) for $19.99, when you can buy a 32x CenDyne/LiteOn (burns a CD in 3 1/2 mins) from Staples for the same $19.99??????? Just curious LINK Fortunately OfficeMax has a 14 day return policy.

Wouldn't it take a 8X more like 10 minutes to burn a CD?

<-----Got a 4X when it first came out, been using it since until I got my Verbatim/Lite-On last week.

I wouldn't mind getting a 8x for a second computer, without the rebate hassles.
i can save more time using both my 32X and the 8x buring at the same time.

If you were serious about the 3 1/2 min burn with a 32x...then my burner has problems. My liteon(rebadged cendyne) regularly takes 4 1/2 minutes. DMA enabled, currently in Ultra DMA mode 2, on its own ide channel as master. Andy advice? Does everyone else usualy get 3 1/2 burn times?

Not to knock your deal, but this deal:

A) is for a 16X drive, not an 8X (see the title)
B) does not require buying something else or waiting for $85 worth of rebates.

Also, you are way off on the time for burning- my old 2X HP burner burned CDs almost that quickly and my 8X Plextor never takes over 10 minutes even on SVCD.

I know that you can get more technical than this by dividing the CD capacity by the KB/S rate of burning, but a quick way to approximate best case scenario burn time is to take the minute capacity of the CD for audio and divide by the X factor of the drive, i.e. for an 80 min CD:

4X burner- 20 minutes
8X burner- 10 minutes
16X burner- 5 minutes
32X burner- 2.5 minutes
48X burner- 1.67 minutes

This is best case and does not take into account lead in/lead out or burning more than rated capacity, but it is a good ballpark estimate.

It clearly shows the law of diminishing returns with faster drives, and given the other factors, I would pick this deal.

Since most people are getting their CenDyne rebate checks in 4 to 6 weeks that not a problem, so it comes down to do you want to spend your $20 on older 16x or 8x technology or newer 32x technology. I would think that most people would want the best technology that their money could buy.

I do a lot of rebates, I got three checks just yesterday. But having said that, I got this drive instead of going the rebate route. There's just something to be said for walking out of the store after paying just $20 instead of $90.
