The Cendyne Lighting III drives are LiteOn mfg drives (12 digit serial# all numbers, Model: LTR-40125S) and Verbatim (rebadged LiteOns) (12 digit serial# all numbers, Model: VBT401248A), but I don't know yet if they "all" the 40x Cendyne drives are LiteOn mfg drives, but so far it looks like they are.

I'll keep mine here and save the $20. The only thing lacking I can see is Mt. Rainier support. And lately it seems doubtful that it will catch on before mass-market DVD+RW etc drives are standard.

don't worry about getting the 40x if you already got the 32x. i got the cendyne 32x last time (a lite-on), and also got a verbatim 40x from staples (another lite-on rebadge). i flashed the verbatim to a lite-on w/o problem. running both with the latest lite-on firmwares, i tested them by burning cds from the redhat linux 7.3 cd2 image. the file is about 638mb. using the latest version of nero, it took the 40x drive 3 min 45 sec to finish the cd, and only 3 min 44 sec for the 32x drive! running nero cd speed did show that the 40x drive averaged about 31.4x, while the 32x drive averaged about 26x. one minor advantage for the 40x drive is that the latest lite-on firmware now supports mt. rainier format; however, i personally think it's still too early to know if this format will ever make it big.

for those of you who have too much time and just can't stop yourself from upgrading to the latest, then go for the 40x deal. you can easily dump your 32x drive on ebay for at least $50, but you'll have to decide whether the hassle is worth your while.

The LTR-40125S is faster by more than 15 seconds, it will burn a 80min CD at 40x writing speed in 3.07 mins, you can disable SmartBurn to write any media at 40x, plus with the newest firmware (version ZS0J) replaces the Zone-CLV recording strategy with the P-Cav strategy (8secs faster at maximum writing speed making it the fastest 40x drive available) and adds suppose for the Mt Rainer format. Also the LTR-40125S can be overclocked to a LTR-48125W with a firmware upgrade.

hi mysticman,

are you referring to burning with smart-burn disabled? i thought that's not recommended? otherwise, from my comparison test, my 32x actually finished burning a 638mb cd faster than my 40x. in some situations, i think the 40x will probably be faster, but the difference in speed between the two is really minimal at this point unless i'm missing something. is there any special settings i need to change?

how do you overclock the lite-on 40x to a 48x? any instructions? lite-on doesn't even have the firmware out for the 48x on their page yet.
