LTR-48125W = Lite-On
4816P = BenQ
SW-248 = Samsung
4816A = AsusTek
CW4802 = Optorite

At least this info might make exchanging the drive a little easier, if you want to hassle with working the system to get a Lite-On.

So what would a 4824P be?
Edit: Guess its a BenQ.

Toddlizzle,

Does the firmware for the 4816p form Benq's US reconize this drive?? Just a thought maybe we could at least flash it with a US firmware. I have this drive also. Anybody know OM's return policy without a upc code??

Just a note, I got a SW-248 (Samsung) through a similar deal about a month ago. It seems to have an issue with overheating. It took me a while to figure that I needed to mount it in a middle bay with nothing either above or below it. Food for thought if someone gets this model.

No, it will not take the US firmware. It acts like it will, but at the last minute it says it's not the correct model/firmware.

I'd be curious to know what they would do, if you take it back without the UPC because you've already sent it in, but you're obviously not happy with the drive. Under ordinary circumstances you'd be out of luck, but if I'm the manager and someone says to me "this drive is not supported in the US" then I think I'd want to make it right. Maybe take a printout of the models listed on the US site and the models listed on the Australian site, and see what they say. Maybe they refund you the price minus the rebate you've got coming. Give it a shot.

Heh.. That's nice. I just checked about 6 local Officemax's for stock because I got the BenQ with my shipment and every damn one of them only have the 4824P BenQ drive. I finally get one store that has a Samsung SW-248 thinking that it would be a better drive and now I hear this. Where did you hear about the overheating issues? Do you have a link?

I was going to keep this drive, but I'm going to sell it for sure now. Doesn't anyone resell these things on Ebay? I still don't know what to do about registering the drive in my name in order to get my rebate. Are you guys registering the drive, submitting your rebates and still selling the drives? You can PM me about it if you don't feel like posting it.

Ok here's the deal. The 4816A is a BenQ. That model was only sold in Europe and Australia, and you can find info and support links on those countries' BenQ sites. The latest firmware posted is version 9.CK and that's over a year old. The drives ship with 9.EK firmware, which seems to be newer. I tried to flash the drive to 9.CK anyway and it detected my drive properly, but then it bluescreens XP every time when it tries to do the flash. Nero InfoTool shows the drive does not support Mount Rainier. I may not want this drive, even for $20, assuming the rebates come. Hope that helps clear up some of the confusion. I thought I was getting a Lite-On when I ordered this...what a disappointment.
How do you know that the 4816A is a BenQ? I thought it was an Asus drive. I thought that the 4824P was the BenQ drive. I'm confused. What number is the Asus drive then?

Sorry, there is no Asus drive. The one with the model # 4816a is an american model of an Asus burner, which led me to believe that the burner was an Asus. But in fact, its a BenQ model that was made in Australia, not in America. Regardless, I wouldn't reccomend holding on to the drive if you have a better one at around 32x or better, that is if you get a BenQ. I'm probably ebaying mine and holding on to my 32x lite-on that overclocked to a 40x

Just got back from Best Buy, they have a Verbatim 52x24x52 that's going on sale tomorrow for $20 after rebate it's a Lite-On in a Verbatim box!! Not even a rebaged one!!! Other's bought this from OM last week? for $29 or $39 after rebate and they had to flash it to make it a Lite-on. Look for 12 NUMBERS ONLY for the serial number on the box. My Best Buy had 12 and only 1 had letters in the serial. The drive model is LTR-52246S and was made in 2/2003. I asked what to do if it went on sale tomorrow and was told to just bring my reciept back.
