It doesn't seem that lite-ons are turning up from this. But nonetheless, I'm not complaining for the price. I ended up with a BenQ 48x16x48....

Cendyne 48x12x48x Burner - Item # 20182491 - $59.99 - $40 in rebates

Anyone else wanna post reviews of a specific drive, I'll update the page.

Types of Drives

the way to tell if you got a lite on is if the serial number is 12 digits (all numbers) - ex. 123456789012

BenQ serial # is as follows: 99B0NXXXXXXXXXXXXXXPW9000 (X are numbers)
Model 4824P is also a BenQ

Anyone else have any reports of what they got. Mine should be arriving later today.

Then add $40 worth of free after rebate fillers. Refer to the FAR thread on FW or look in your local sale paper
local sale paper

Then use the $25 off $100 coupon and it should run you about $3 after taxes + the cost of stamps.

I'm too lazy to post the rest of the details. Anyone want to help me out feel free. But for reference, here is my order

Anyway to tell if this is a Liteon from the box without opening it?? Just thought if I got something else if it would be worth it to exchange it without opening it.

On the back of the box there's a large sticker headed 'performance specifications'.
Near the bottom of the list on this sticker (just above the serial no. bar code) it lists 'Drive Model'-
LTR-48246S is a Liteon, the Aopen model is either 48x12x50 or CRW 4850 - I forget which,
If I remember right some people have also been finding BenQs - don't recall model no. at all.

I bought one yesterday and inside was a 48x24x48x drive. NOT a Lite-on. No idea what drive it is. I could careless about 24x CDRW speeds, I barely ever use 'em and the ones I have are 4x rated anyway.

As for the drive: Firmware appears to be version D.IC, Drive ID = ATAPI 48x24x. Basically no useful info. They had a ton on the shelf yesterday.

Couldn't find anything useful about the drive at Cendynes site or on Google. Anyone know what brand this one may be, I heard optowrite may be a possibility?

Indeed, that's the model. So, how are the BenQ's holding up, should I expect failure after a few burns?

[edit]Just FYI, the BenQ Europe site has a firmware for this drive version D.LC, mine came with D.IC, so, been a few revisions. [/edit] Not sure what the changes are. If anyones having any problems feel free to try it out. I installed it under XP w/ no problems....

Mine came as model number 4816A, which drive is this?? Maybe I'll go to the BM and see what they have.

I just looked at BenQ site and it's a BenQ 48x16x48, anybody care to rate this?? Should I try to get a Lite-on?? It's replacing a Iomega, I mean Plextor 12x10x32.

Ok, now I looked at ASUS's site since they have a 4816a also, so how do I tell what it is?? I don't want to open it up as I don't know what the BM has. Maybe I'm stuck with this drive.

I was able to come up with some info on this Cendyne drive. As far as I know, this is accurate. Supposedly they mark the actual drive ID on the box, so you should be able to check it before you open it. I haven't received mine yet, so I can't tell you where to look, but if this is true then I'm sure someone can verify.

LTR-48125W = Lite-On
4816P = BenQ
SW-248 = Samsung
4816A = AsusTek
CW4802 = Optorite

At least this info might make exchanging the drive a little easier, if you want to hassle with working the system to get a Lite-On.

I think getting a Liteon is slim to none with this drive with all the sales (need to find old stock!!), I went to the BM and they had 1 BenQ left, I saw an opened returned one behind the counter, I guess somebody didn't want that one!! I guess for $10 after the rebates it's not worth chasing a Liteon, I'll just kept what I got.

I decided to jump on this deal yesterday.

I went to my local OfficeMax (eastside Cincinnati) and asked them to check all of their stock for Lite-Ons. They had a stack of 7 drives behind the counter. Each of the 7 was an ASUS, model 4816A. So I ended up with an ASUS.

Question: can I download firmware upgrades from the ASUS website for the "real" 4816A, or do I need to get firmware updates from Cendyne?

Has anyone looked at Staples stock on Cendyne 48x burners lately. I got stuck with a BenQ and all my local OM has is the BenQ drives. I was thinking about buying from Staples and doing the old switcharoo. After all, if Cendyne doesn't think that it's that important to put Liteon drives in some boxes and BenQ drives in the same box, why should any of the retailers care if they get back a totally sealed 48x Cendyne drive (BenQ).

BTW.. This is sort of off topic, but for those of you that are selling these drives on Ebay, how are you getting around registering the drives at Cendyne?

TIA,

Sal

In my experience Cendyne does not modify their drives firmware to prevent flashing, you can use the original manuf firmware to flash the drives. I've done this with two different drivers from Cendyne no problem/no hacks.

I got a 4824P, looks like a 48x24x48 BenQ drive. I already have a Liteon in my system and I'm probably just going to give this away as a gift or maybe sell it, so finding a Liteon isn't real important to me. I used my MSN dollars for this deal, so I'm getting $70 back in rebates and a bunch of stuff in the process. Thanks for the deal!

Hmm...

I tried to update the firmware with the latest ASUS 4816A firmware and it didn't like it -- it said the drive does not support that firmware.

My current firmware version is listed as 9.EK. Not that it helps when I can't figure out what kind of burner it is.

What was the model number of your burner?

The model number shown on the box is 4816A, which is why I had assumed it was an ASUS. But like I said, I downloaded & attempted to run the most recent 4816A firmware from the ASUS website (version 1.13), and it wouldn't install.

Anyone else try to update the firmwire on an Asus. I'm gonna try it myself in a few days. I'm actually just thinking about not using this drive and sticking to my lite-on 40x... or maybe just having 2 burners (which seems kinda pointless)

Ok here's the deal. The 4816A is a BenQ. That model was only sold in Europe and Australia, and you can find info and support links on those countries' BenQ sites. The latest firmware posted is version 9.CK and that's over a year old. The drives ship with 9.EK firmware, which seems to be newer. I tried to flash the drive to 9.CK anyway and it detected my drive properly, but then it bluescreens XP every time when it tries to do the flash. Nero InfoTool shows the drive does not support Mount Rainier. I may not want this drive, even for $20, assuming the rebates come. Hope that helps clear up some of the confusion. I thought I was getting a Lite-On when I ordered this...what a disappointment.

Thanks for the info.

So now I know I got stuck with a BenQ. Hmm. Given that I don't use Mt. Rainier and I don't really do a whole lot of burning (probably a CD every couple of weeks), do you think it would be worth it to me to ebay this drive and get a better quality one? I guess what I'm wondering is if I would notice a big difference between this and a Lite-On, for example, since I don't use Mt. Rainier and I don't do a lot of burning. Suggestions?
