Got my delivery this morning and my box has the OptoRite 48X16X48X Model #CW4802 in it. Anybody know anything about these drives?
I have searched but can't find any information or reviews on them.

MysticMan1 I don't see any info in this thread that links to positive or negative comments on this drive. I have and do see were you mention that there are two different drives being boxed in this retail package. I have seen the same as Harvey posted, a lot of questions. As long as the drive is dependable and does a equally good job as the Lite-On I don't really care who made it but that is the unknown factor.

Got my stuff today, I got the Optorite 48x16x48 drive. When I first saw that on the drive, I was thinkin "what the?". I thought perhaps the drive was packaged wrong, so I went over to CenDyne's site to check out the models, when I found out that they don't even sell any 48x16x48 models (well they do, just inside of a 48x12x48 box, so they list it as 48x12x48). So I thought a double "what the?" and went on to think that perhaps they just got the trays mixed up at the manufacturer, lol! Anyhow, I realize it's the Optorite. I was hoping to get the LiteOn though, because LiteOn seems to be quite popular, thus supported widely, with many technical questions already answered online, plus a great track record with making backups of copy protected CDs (ie SafeDisc 2 and weak sectors - EFM). Plus, I'm probably gonna put this in a computer I'm building for someone else, so I don't want it to zonk out after a couple months. Could I perhaps take it back to a B&M OM in the area even though I ordered it online, saying I wanted the 48x12x48 and they gave me the wrong one in the right package (I don't think a CS person would know any better, plus I did order a 48x12x48, not a 48x16x48)? Otherwise the CDRs (80 min ones ), phone, and erasers look good. Even if the CDRW did zonk out, 22 bucks for the CDRs, phone, and erasers is still a good price (not hot, but still good).

Even rebadged Lite-On's can be different. I got in on the 40x Memorex for $20 (after coupon and MIR), a few weeks ago. The tech reviews showed that the same mechanical drive burned better after flashing to the Lite-On firmware than with the original from Memorex. Of course it was even better when it flashed to 48x.

If the boxes are the same, you may get a clue if one of them includes Nero and the other doesn't. Otherwise, you'll have to find a friendly sales person who will let you open them to see if one looks like a Lite-On.

Just received it. Optorite 48x16x48x. Model number CW 4802. It's too bad I don't have any CDRW's to try out at 16x. Only have 10x's lying around.

Damn, I just got mine, and it was an Optiwrite. Now the question is, do I try to exchange it for a Liteon?

I bought both the Liteon as well as the Optowrite version at the B&M. Both boxes look exactly the same except for 2 things. 1) the "Drive Model reads LTR/48125W" for the Liteon and 2) the serial number is a 12 digit instead of alphanumeric for the Optowrite. I would go to a B&M and ask to look at the box. If it's a liteon, buy, then return the other one. Or, go to another store like Staples or Circuitcity and see if they carry the Liteons. Then return the other one. I doubt they will notice the difference.

I got my order today. I got an Optoright 48x16x48, and it'll burn a 700mb coaster in 2:24! Pisses the hell out of me, hasn't burned a single working disc yet.

Ummm... YES! Run, don't walk, back to exchange it if they'll let you. LTR-48125W is definitely the Lite-On model number. That's what Windoze reports for my what was once a Memorex 40x.

The Optorite ain't bad so far. Burned the cheapest disc I own, a Hi-Tech 16x, at 40x, no problem. Though this is louder than my 12x10x32x Lite-On. It's kinda funny hearing my regular cd-rom and this thing rev up to burn a copy of a cd. Sounds like two jet planes are racing.

Also burns my generic 4-10x cdrw's at 12x.

Damn it, slowing down the burn speed increases the chances of a successful burn, but I still lost many CDR's due to failed burns. I'm going to try exchanging the drive tomorrow.

Does it say 48x12x48x on the box? Did anyone else get a 16x re-writer? I got stuck with an Optowrong 48x12x48x. I didn't open the box yet but it sure seems like a hassle to try an exchange.

I got two drives out of this deal. I have the LiteOn and the OptoRite. I have used Nero's benchmarks on both of them and they are not much different at all in terms of performance. They can read and write all of the same things, except for the "Mount Rainier" write feature which is exclusive to the LiteOn. I don't even know what that is, so it doesn't concern me.

I just got done backing up a few copy protected games with each one. Worked flawlessly!

It might be the media... Have you used the same media on a different writer at the same speed you are attempting to use it at on the Cendyne?

I guess no one reads the info at the beginnig of the thread I've had this information about the two different drive since day one.

This CenDyne 48x12x48 drives are mfg'd by LiteOn Model #LTR-48125W (12 digits. no letters) and New! OptoRite 48X16X48X Model #CW4802

Link to CenDyne 48x specs

Link to LiteOn 48x review

Link to optorite 48X16X48X specs

The optorite is not a LiteOn it's made by a new company that started mfg'g drives in Oct. of 2001, so there hasn't been a lot of feedback on the quality and performance of the CDRW drives they made.

Yes it does! I didn't open the drive. As previously posted I could find no information reguarding the CW 4802. I called around to the local B&M stores in the 37902 zip and found 2 of the 3 still had the Lite-On versions. I asked the last store if I could exchange because I really wanted the other model. He asked if I had my packing slip and if I had not opend the box. After I confirmed these two things he said "sure no problem" so off to OM I headed, swapped the drive for the LTR-48125W and out the door in 5 minutes.
Call your local B&M's and check their stock, it seems a lot of people who ordered online and over the phone are getting the CW 4802.

Thanks for the deal MysticMan1, I did read your post from day one (Lite-On?) and was aware of the possibility of not getting a Lite-On!
