From the looks of it on OptoRite's site, and the fact that it comes with "ExacLink" anti-coaster technology, I'd say this is not a Lite-On. Here's what I got searching Google for OptoRite 48x

My drive's front panel does not look like the picture in the OptoRite site, and where does it say ExacLink? Windows and NeroInfo just say "CenDyne_481648AX" and firmware 120f.

The drive burns successfully. However Nero CD Speed seems to loop forever in the first test (write speed?). Actually, I never ran this test with my 2-yr-old 4X driver before. Or it may also has something to do with my PCI overclocked at 41 Mhz?

Ok, my package box does have a specification sticker label that says "Drive Model CW4802", i.e. OptoRite.

However, the label also says "Writing Method: Dao, Tao, Sao, AND MT. RAINIER!". Since neither Nero or OptoRite's webpage mentions it, is this label lying about Mt. Rainier but true about its CW4802 identity?

Anyone has the same label as mine?

Got the drive, wow that was fast shipping [ordered yesterday?]
Got the CW 4802 model. On the label on the back it says it supports mt rainier too [whatever that is]
Also says Part # CDICD00118
The front looks nothing like the optorite drive pic from the link posted

Try burning them slower.

Damn it, slowing down the burn speed increases the chances of a successful burn, but I still lost many CDR's due to failed burns. I'm going to try exchanging the drive tomorrow.

It might be the media... Have you used the same media on a different writer at the same speed you are attempting to use it at on the Cendyne?

Hmm... I've never had problems burning CDR's faster than their rated speed. Granted, not 32x higher than their rated speed. I don't have any 48x CDR's to test this out though, I hope it's just the media.

I do occasionally get a bad burn with my Cendyne AND my Liteon, using 32X Verbatim. If I always write at 32X, I never waste any.

Most of the time I burn at 48X though and only probably 5% are bad.

Many media won't reliably burn at 40-48X... some will work MOST of the time, but having to recheck every burn, hardly makes it worth burning at the higher speed in the first place... i'll probably burn most of the CDR i already have at 24-32X and hope that future media is better.

if u mean verify the data after burning, u can turn that off.

btw i just got mine this morning, it's a cendyne, but i am still happy

i don't like lite-on that much, cuz i had a lite-on dvdrom & it fails to read after
several rebootz, then i exchange a new one(cuz they can't fix)
still got the problem but it doesn't happen that much
sigh :/

I received my drive today. It is a OptoRite 48X16X48X Model #CW4802. I was really hoping to get a Liteon. There is no local OfficeMax to make a exchange so I guess I'm stuck with it. This was a good deal anyway.

I'm in the same boat, I was kinda hoping for a Lite-on but the so far the drive has worked flawlessly. Would be nice to have access to firmware upgrades though. Any one know who makes it and more importantly where the support comes from?

Wierd thing is, the 'quality' blanks I have, TDK and Fuji, are Taiyo Yuden 16x and 24x and only burn at 32X.
The crappy no-name HiVals that were free after rebate with this deal are 16x and burn at 40X.
Kinda strange but I'm guessing the Hi-Vals won't last as long.

If your drive doesn't say "ExacLink" (the name of the burnproof technology) what does it say?? It may not be a OptoRite or a LiteOn.

Well, just got back from a fruitless trip to the Officemax in Culver City. They had the LTR models, but they were all sold out. I guess I'll call Pasadena tomorrow and see if they have any left...otherwise, I'm stuck with this Optorite. I wonder if it would be worth it to cut out the UPC, ebay the drive, and buy a new LiteOn...Newegg has them for $53 shipped free right now. Hmm...

Got mine today, it is an OptoRite as well, I guess? Mine came with Nero Express but it does not look like anything in the picture, looks sort of like a Lite-On but has two buttons on the face plate. The Model # is CW 4802. The only thing I am concerned with is whether or not OptoRite will have firmware updates in the future if needed.

So, can anyone tell me if there is a difference in drives that came with or without Nero? Maybe a third company involved?

Got the Opti model myself, Im very happy with it so far as it seems to burn most any disks I have at 40x No biggie on the manufacture as long as it works, anyway two months from now there will be a killer deal on a 50x+ model out there for me to score on

Got mine today. Looked like the UPS guy took the long route. Mine too is a OptoRite CW 4802.

Newbie question: My old CD-ROM is a 8x. Does that mean with the 8x as the reader, the fastest I could burn with the CenDyne is 8x, regardless of media?

To all off you who didn't get lite-on's and want to exchange, this was posted on Cendyne's site:

"I cannot help but feel cheated by Cendyne. I bought this drive fully thinking that it was a Lite-On. I didn't even think about checking the label on the drive itself. And since I have already mutilated the box sending in for the rebate, I'm stuck and can't return the drive. Oh, well, I'm going to think positive and test this drive by copying a few games and hope that it works.

What is your opinion on this guys?"

"Since we label the model number on the box, and will exchange the drive for what you thought you were getting, there's no problem.

contact tech@cendyne.com to start looking into an exchange if you require one."

Looks like Cendyne will replace them with a Lite-on if you ask nicely.

Regarding the 48x16x48 drives
This was posted 9/30/2 on Cendyne's support site:

"I purchased a 48x12x48 CDRW today from OfficeMax and inside was a 48X16X48 CDRW. The firmware version is 120F and the name of the drive is 481648AX. Who makes this drive and how do I get the firmware. Is this a Cyberdrive CDRW? Thanks for the help."
Dave Thompson

"It's an accesstek drive, and that is the most CURRENT firmware for that drive."

I got the opto also, and no, I won't complain, but after seeing PagannagaP's post above I may try for an exchange (after I send for the rebate). Thanks for the deal, whichever way it works out !!!

Circuit City also carries the Cendyne 48x12x48 CD-RW drives, if you want a LiteOn bad enough, you could buy a Cendyne/LiteOn (model # LTR48125W) from CC and then return the Cendyne/OptoRite back to Circuit City for your refund.

EDITED AGAIN: Received the Optowrong in today's FedEx. Figuring that I could probably do better, I headed out to try and exchange it. Struck out at two Staples (neither even has the 48x12x48), and one OM (after convincing the CS lady that I wasn't nuts, she went back and looked--said she had two 48125S'es..no Ws). So, I went over to CC, not expecting to have any luck there, but eureka...all they had were 48125Ws! Bought one and will return the Optowrong there tomorrow.

I got a 16x CD-RW writter at 12x price. Why should I complain?

But I will complain if it is not working well. My ezCD cannot see it. Maybe I need update my software, or connect it on MB instead of ATA card.

It does burn my CDRW at 16x, under XP.

I got on this thread early but not early enough. The web site was sold out. I found and bought a Lite-On at an Officemax but they would not take internet coupon of $25 off $100. Does anyone know of any other coupons out there that I could use. I would like to get better deal than $40 if I could. Anyone had any success with this at OM stores in Atlanta area?

To make a long story short, if anyone knows of any OM or other coupons to use to get sweeter deal please e-mail to e-mail address in my profile or to chuck.bryant@cox.net.

I got the Optorite and did not have any luck finding an OfficeMax with a Liteon to exchange it with so I decided to give it a try. So far it seems to burns at 48x with no errors and it performs very well in Nero CD Speed tests. On my 695MB test disk the average read speed was measured to be 38.13x which is slightly higher than my Liteon 40x12x48 (LTR-40125S) which had a average read speed of 37.72x.

It looks like a decent drive at least from my limited tests. Reads slightly faster than my Liteon, burns CD-RW disks at 16x, and doesn't sound too loud, but it's hard for me to tell because my ps fan is going out and makes a lot of racket.

Now as long as they incorporate Mt. Raineer support in upcoming firmware revs I'll be even happier. I was going to try sending the drive back to Cendyne for exchange, but so far I haven't found any reason not to be satisfied with it.

What do you others think of it? Has anyone tested to see if it will copy SD2 protected disks?

Accesstek/Optorite turns out to be an MSI subsidiary. SO there is a good chance that the drives will have continuing support.
As of SD2: I burnt a copy of SoF2 using CloneCD without any problems.

SpyKey:
That's good news about the SD2 support. That gives me another reason not to bother with trying ot exchange it for a Liteon. Are you sure Accesstek is a subsidiary of MSI? I see that MSI sells the same burner (48x16x48 with Exactlink technology), but I assumed they were just rebadging the Accesstek drive. I guess they could be using the MSI label for their retail boxed drives and the Optorite for their OEM drives they sell to companies like Cendyne. If that's the case we should be able to get firmware updates directly from MSI.
