From a previous thread:

Tyoung88 stated that you can tell by looking at the part number and
5224W - BENQ
5224P - BENQ
LTR-52246S - Lite-On
CRW-5224A - ASUS

It sounds like the Lite-On and the ASUS are the way to go. I picked up one of these (a lite-on) from OM B&M and it already has the lite-on firmware installed. No flashing appeared to be needed. Hope this helps.

You have to order online and have them ship it to you. OM doesn't do store pick up (yet)

I called last week about using MSN dollars via the phone, they won't do that either. Only online.

acer is a subsidiary of asus, so they're pretty much the same company... kinda like matsushita and panasonic

I almost missed this and I wanted to post it so you guys are aware of it. In order to be eligible for the CenDyne (not OfficeMax) rebate, according to the "Terms and Conditions":

5. You must register your product either online at www.cendyne.com or mail in the registration form that was included in the box.

I know about this. It seems as though Cendyne is only asking you to do this through the Officemax deals. I did a couple of Cendyne Staples deals and they just ask for the UPC and serial number label.

FWIW.. FYI.. Just out of curiousity, I did NOT register the last Cendyne drive deal through OM to see what would happen and so far so good. I haven't received my rebate check yet, but it says valid and processing on the rebateshq site.

The reason why I didn't register it is because I will probably sell it and if I do, I don't want the drive registered in my name. That's probably why Cendyne did this in the first place. Most companies count on people buying the product and then not following through with the rebates, but there are a ton of people that buy the drives, do the rebates and then turn the drives on Ebay. That probably really burns companies like Cendyne.

Now.. I highly doubt that they will enforce this. Rebateshq is a third party rebate house and I highly doubt that they have the man hours or are willing to pay for the man hours to cross check if a drive has been registered before issuing the rebate. I think they are just trying to bluff us into registering the drives. YMMV and I'm making no claims of this. It's just what I think is going on.

Asus does make cd drives as does Acer..

Asus = good, Acer = 100% junk... Yes, they are both the same company but their Acer subsidiary makes junk..

I got a Lite-On on this deal today. Just told the sales lady I only wanted one if they had model LTR-52246S, like the display box, and she went back in the little room where they keep the good stuff and she brought one out.
It was manufactured in 02/2003 and was in the latest style of packaging so it can't have been sitting around too long.

Just got mine today too. Lite-on for sure. Told the sales clerk to check the stockroom, and he came out with two, one in each hand. Haven't opened the box yet, as I am waiting on my new case and power supply from Newegg. My original Cendyne Lightning V burned up Sunday night when my psu when up in smoke!

I had to visit two different Officemax B&M locations to find the Lite-on model, as the original store I visited had nothing but the Acer/Asus drives. The guy made three trips to the stockroom looking for me.

Those of you near "less busy" Officmax locations may have better luck. The high traffic locations likely have the newer shipments.

I left one (that I can verify was Lite-on) in the Officemax in West Orlando. There may be more...

Good luck!
